Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Paṭisallānasutta Retreat

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œPaį¹isallānārāmā, bhikkhave, viharatha paį¹isallānaratā, ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyuttā, anirākatajjhānā, vipassanāya samannāgatā, brÅ«hetāro suƱƱāgārānaṁ. ā€œEnjoy retreat, mendicants, love retreat. Be committed to inner serenity of the heart, don’t neglect absorption, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.

Paį¹isallānārāmānaṁ, bhikkhave, viharataṁ paį¹isallānaratānaṁ ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyuttānaṁ anirākatajjhānānaṁ vipassanāya samannāgatānaṁ brÅ«hetānaṁ suƱƱāgārānaṁ dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aƱƱataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaį¹…khaṁ—A mendicant who enjoys retreat can expect one of two results:

diį¹į¹heva dhamme aƱƱā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitāā€ti. enlightenment in this very life, or if there’s something left over, non-return.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYe santacittā nipakā, ā€œWith minds at peace, alert,

satimanto ca jhāyino; mindful and meditative,

Sammā dhammaṁ vipassanti, they rightly discern the Dhamma,

kāmesu anapekkhino. unconcerned for sensual pleasures.

Appamādaratā santā, Delighting in diligence, peaceful,

pamāde bhayadassino; seeing fear in negligence,

Abhabbā parihānāya, such a one can’t decline,

nibbānasseva santikeā€ti. and has drawn near to extinguishment.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Aṭṭhamaṁ.
