VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āAvijjÄ, bhikkhave, pubbaį¹
gamÄ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ anvadeva ahirikaį¹ anottappaį¹; āMendicants, ignorance precedes the attainment of unskillful qualities, with lack of conscience and prudence following along.
vijjÄ ca kho, bhikkhave, pubbaį¹
gamÄ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ anvadeva hirottappanāti. Knowledge precedes the attainment of skillful qualities, with conscience and prudence following along.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYÄ kÄcimÄ duggatiyo, āBad destinies of whatever kind,
asmiį¹ loke paramhi ca; in this world or the next,
AvijjÄmÅ«likÄ sabbÄ, are all rooted in ignorance,
icchÄlobhasamussayÄ. compounded of greed and desire.
Yato ca hoti pÄpiccho, Since one of corrupt wishes is
ahirÄ«ko anÄdaro; unconscientious, lacking regard for others,
Tato pÄpaį¹ pasavati, they create much wickedness,
apÄyaį¹ tena gacchati. which sends them to a place of loss.
TasmÄ chandaƱca lobhaƱca, Therefore, dispelling desire
avijjaƱca virÄjayaį¹; and greed and ignorance,
Vijjaį¹ uppÄdayaį¹ bhikkhu, a mendicant arousing knowledge
sabbÄ duggatiyo jaheāti. would cast off all bad destinies.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
