Tapanīyasutta Mortifying
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āDveme, bhikkhave, dhammÄ tapanÄ«yÄ. āThese two things, mendicants, are mortifying.
Katame dve? What two?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco akatakalyÄį¹o hoti, akatakusalo, akatabhÄ«ruttÄį¹o, katapÄpo, kataluddo, katakibbiso. Itās when someone hasnāt done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad things, violence and sin.
So āakataį¹ me kalyÄį¹anātipi tappati, ākataį¹ me pÄpanātipi tappati. Thinking, āI havenāt done good thingsā, theyāre mortified. Thinking, āI have done bad thingsā, theyāre mortified.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammÄ tapanÄ«yÄāti. These are the two things that are mortifying.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āKÄyaduccaritaį¹ katvÄ, āHaving done bad things
vacÄ«duccaritÄni ca; by way of body,
Manoduccaritaį¹ katvÄ, speech, and mind,
yaƱcaƱƱaį¹ dosasaƱhitaį¹. and whatever else is corrupt;
AkatvÄ kusalaį¹ kammaį¹, not having done good deeds,
katvÄnÄkusalaį¹ bahuį¹; and having done many bad,
KÄyassa bhedÄ duppaƱƱo, when their body breaks up, that witless person
nirayaį¹ sopapajjatÄ«āti. is reborn in hell.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
