DÄnasutta Giving
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āEvaƱce, bhikkhave, sattÄ jÄneyyuį¹ dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgassa vipÄkaį¹ yathÄhaį¹ jÄnÄmi, na adatvÄ bhuƱjeyyuį¹, na ca nesaį¹ maccheramalaį¹ cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹heyya. āMendicants, if sentient beings only knew, as I do, the fruit of giving and sharing, they would not eat without first giving, and the stain of stinginess would not occupy their minds.
Yopi nesaį¹ assa carimo Älopo carimaį¹ kabaįø·aį¹, tatopi na asaį¹vibhajitvÄ bhuƱjeyyuį¹, sace nesaį¹ paį¹iggÄhakÄ assu. They would not eat without sharing even their last mouthful, their last morsel, so long as there was someone to receive it.
YasmÄ ca kho, bhikkhave, sattÄ na evaį¹ jÄnanti dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgassa vipÄkaį¹ yathÄhaį¹ jÄnÄmi, tasmÄ adatvÄ bhuƱjanti, maccheramalaƱca nesaį¹ cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya tiį¹į¹hatÄ«āti. It is because sentient beings do not know, as I do, the fruit of giving and sharing, that they eat without first giving, and the stain of stinginess occupies their minds.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āEvaƱce sattÄ jÄneyyuį¹, āIf sentient beings only knew
yathÄvuttaį¹ mahesinÄ; how great is the fruit
VipÄkaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgassa, of giving and sharing
yathÄ hoti mahapphalaį¹. as taught by the great seer!
Vineyya maccheramalaį¹, Rid of the stain of stinginess,
vippasannena cetasÄ; with clear and confident heart,
Dajjuį¹ kÄlena ariyesu, they would duly give to the noble ones,
yattha dinnaį¹ mahapphalaį¹. where a gift is very fruitful.
AnnaƱca datvÄ bahuno, Having given food in abundance
dakkhiį¹eyyesu dakkhiį¹aį¹; to those worthy of a religious donation,
Ito cutÄ manussattÄ, after passing from the human realm,
saggaį¹ gacchanti dÄyakÄ. the givers go to heaven.
Te ca saggagatÄ tattha, And when they have arrived there in heaven,
modanti kÄmakÄmino; they enjoy all the pleasures they desire.
VipÄkaį¹ saį¹vibhÄgassa, The generous enjoy the
anubhonti amaccharÄāti. fruit of giving and sharing.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
