Tatiyavagga Chapter Three
Aį¹į¹hipuƱjasutta A Heap of Bones
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āEkapuggalassa, bhikkhave, kappaį¹ sandhÄvato saį¹sarato siyÄ evaį¹ mahÄ aį¹į¹hikaį¹
kalo aį¹į¹hipuƱjo aį¹į¹hirÄsi yathÄyaį¹ vepullo pabbato, sace saį¹hÄrako assa, sambhataƱca na vinasseyyÄāti. āMendicants, one person roaming and transmigrating for an eon would amass a heap of bones the size of this Mount Vepulla, if they were gathered together and not lost.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āEkassekena kappena, āIf the bones of a single person
puggalassaį¹į¹hisaƱcayo; for a single eon were gathered up,
SiyÄ pabbatasamo rÄsi, theyād make a pile the size of a mountain:
iti vuttaį¹ mahesinÄ. so said the great seer.
So kho panÄyaį¹ akkhÄto, And this is declared to be
vepullo pabbato mahÄ; as huge as Mount Vepulla,
Uttaro gijjhakÅ«į¹assa, higher than the Vultureās Peak
magadhÄnaį¹ giribbaje. near the Mountainfold of the Magadhans.
Yato ca ariyasaccÄni, But then, with right understanding,
sammappaƱƱÄya passati; a person sees the noble truthsā
Dukkhaį¹ dukkhasamuppÄdaį¹, suffering, sufferingās origin,
dukkhassa ca atikkamaį¹; sufferingās transcendence,
AriyaƱcaį¹į¹haį¹
gikaį¹ maggaį¹, and the noble eightfold path
dukkhÅ«pasamagÄminaį¹. that leads to the stilling of suffering.
Sa sattakkhattuį¹ paramaį¹, After roaming on seven times at most,
sandhÄvitvÄna puggalo; that person
Dukkhassantakaro hoti, makes an end of suffering,
sabbasaį¹yojanakkhayÄāti. with the ending of all fetters.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
