Dutiyavagga Chapter Two
Paduį¹į¹hacittasutta A Corrupted Mind
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āIdhÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, ekaccaį¹ puggalaį¹ paduį¹į¹hacittaį¹ evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄmi: āMendicants, when Iāve comprehended the mind of a person whose mind is corrupted, I understand:
āimamhi cÄyaį¹ samaye puggalo kÄlaį¹ kareyya yathÄbhataį¹ nikkhitto evaį¹ nirayeā. āIf this person were to die right now, they would be cast down to hell.ā
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Cittaį¹ hissa, bhikkhave, paduį¹į¹haį¹. Because their mind is corrupted.
Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evamāidhekacce sattÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjantÄ«āti. Corruption of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āPaduį¹į¹hacittaį¹ ƱatvÄna, āKnowing a personās
ekaccaį¹ idha puggalaį¹; corrupted mind,
EtamatthaƱca byÄkÄsi, the Buddha explained this matter
buddho bhikkhÅ«na santike. in the mendicantsā presence.
Imamhi cÄyaį¹ samaye, If that person
kÄlaį¹ kayirÄtha puggalo; were to die at this time,
Nirayaį¹ upapajjeyya, theyād be reborn in hell,
cittaį¹ hissa padÅ«sitaį¹. for their mind is corrupted.
YathÄ haritvÄ nikkhipeyya, Such a person is cast down as surely
evamevaį¹ tathÄvidho; as if theyād been carried off and put there.
Cetopadosahetu hi, For corruption of mind is the reason
sattÄ gacchanti duggatināti. sentient beings go to a bad place.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
