Ekakanipāta The Book of the Ones

Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Paduį¹į¹hacittasutta A Corrupted Mind

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œIdhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ paduį¹į¹hacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi: ā€œMendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of a person whose mind is corrupted, I understand:

ā€˜imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye’. ā€˜If this person were to die right now, they would be cast down to hell.’

Taṁ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, paduṭṭhaṁ. Because their mind is corrupted.

Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjantÄ«ā€ti. Corruption of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œPaduį¹į¹hacittaṁ Ʊatvāna, ā€œKnowing a person’s

ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ; corrupted mind,

EtamatthaƱca byākāsi, the Buddha explained this matter

buddho bhikkhÅ«na santike. in the mendicants’ presence.

Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye, If that person

kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo; were to die at this time,

Nirayaṁ upapajjeyya, they’d be reborn in hell,

cittaṁ hissa padūsitaṁ. for their mind is corrupted.

Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya, Such a person is cast down as surely

evamevaṁ tathāvidho; as if they’d been carried off and put there.

Cetopadosahetu hi, For corruption of mind is the reason

sattā gacchanti duggatinā€ti. sentient beings go to a bad place.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Dasamaṁ.

Dutiyo vaggo.

Tassuddānaṁ

Moho kodho atha makkho,

Vijjā taṇhā sekhaduve ca;

Bhedo sāmaggipuggalo,

Vaggamāhu dutiyanti vuccatīti.
