Ekakanipāta The Book of the Ones

Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Paį¹hamasekhasutta A Trainee (1st)

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œSekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamānasassa anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ patthayamānassa viharato ajjhattikaṁ aį¹…ganti karitvā nāƱƱaṁ ekaį¹…gampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ bahÅ«pakāraṁ yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikāro. ā€œTaking into account interior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as rational application of mind for a trainee mendicant who hasn’t achieved their heart’s desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Yoniso, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasi karonto akusalaṁ pajahati, kusalaṁ bhāvetÄ«ā€ti. A mendicant rationally applying the mind gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œYonisomanasikāro, ā€œThere is nothing so helpful

dhammo sekhassa bhikkhuno; for a trainee mendicant

Natthañño evaṁ bahukāro, aspiring for the ultimate goal

uttamatthassa pattiyā; as rational application of mind.

Yoniso padahaṁ bhikkhu, Striving rationally, a mendicant

khayaṁ dukkhassa pāpuṇeā€ti. attains the end of suffering.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
