Ahaį¹ vasÄmi upari, I stayed upstream,
heį¹į¹hÄ vasati brÄhmaį¹o. the brahmin downstream.
Vicaranto anukūlamhi, Wandering along the riverbank,
uddhaį¹ me assamaddasa; he saw my hermitage upstream.
Tattha maį¹ paribhÄsetvÄ, Then he abused and cursed me,
abhisapi muddhaphÄlanaį¹. that my head would split in seven.
Yadihaį¹ tassa pakuppeyyaį¹, If I were upset with him
yadi sÄ«laį¹ na gopaye; and if I were not taking care of my ethics,
OloketvÄnahaį¹ tassa, then just with a glance
kareyyaį¹ chÄrikaį¹ viya. I could have reduced him to ashes.
Yaį¹ so tadÄ maį¹ abhisapi, But when he cursed me then,
kupito duį¹į¹hamÄnaso; so angry and bitter-hearted,
Tasseva matthake nipati, it fell right back on his own head:
yogena taį¹ pamocayiį¹. I freed him from that yoke.
Anurakkhiį¹ mama sÄ«laį¹, I guarded my ethics,
nÄrakkhiį¹ mama jÄ«vitaį¹; not my life.
SÄ«lavÄ hi tadÄ Äsiį¹, For then I was ethical,
bodhiyÄyeva kÄraį¹Äāti. because it was solely for awakening.ā
