Kururājacariya Kururāja’s Conduct

ā€œPunāparaṁ yadā homi, ā€œThen again when I reigned

indapatthe puruttame; in Indapatta, the capital city,

Rājā dhanaƱcayo nāma, as the king named DhanaƱjaya

kusale dasahupāgato. I was blessed with the ten skillful deeds.

Kaliį¹…garaį¹­į¹­havisayā, From the realm of Kaliį¹…ga

brāhmaṇā upagaƱchu maṁ; brahmins came to me

Āyācuṁ maṁ hatthināgaṁ, requesting the royal elephant

dhaƱƱaṁ maį¹…galasammataṁ. that was lucky and deemed auspicious.

ā€˜Avuį¹­į¹­hiko janapado, ā€˜Our nation is suffering from drought,

dubbhikkho chātako mahā; food is scarce and famine abounds,

Dadāhi pavaraṁ nāgaṁ, please give the noble elephant

nÄ«laṁ aƱjanasavhayaṁ’. of midnight hue named AƱjana.’

ā€˜Na me yācakamanuppatte, ā€˜When supplicants come to me

paį¹­ikkhepo anucchavo; it is unbefitting to refuse.

Mā me bhijji samādānaṁ, Let not my vow be broken,

dassāmi vipulaṁ gajaṁ’. I shall give the mighty elephant.’

Nāgaṁ gahetvā soį¹‡įøÄya, Taking the elephant by the trunk,

bhiį¹…gāre ratanāmaye; and a bejeweled ceremonial vessel,

Jalaṁ hatthe ākiritvā, I sprinkled water on the hand,

brāhmaṇānaṁ adaṁ gajaṁ. and gave the elephant to the brahmins.

Tassa nāge padinnamhi, When I had given the elephant,

amaccā etadabravuṁ; my ministers said,

ā€˜Kiṁ nu tuyhaṁ varaṁ nāgaṁ, ā€˜Why did you give the noble elephant

yācakānaṁ padassasi. to the supplicants?

DhaƱƱaṁ maį¹…galasampannaṁ, He was lucky and endowed with the auspicious,

saį¹…gāmavijayuttamaṁ; supreme victor in battle.

Tasmiṁ nāge padinnamhi, Now you have given the elephant,

kiṁ te rajjaṁ karissati’. how shall you govern the realm?’

ā€˜Rajjampi me dade sabbaṁ, ā€˜I would give the entire realm

sarīraṁ dajjamattano; and my physical body as well.

Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ, Omniscience is precious to me,

tasmā nāgaṁ adāsahanā€™ā€ti. which is why I gave away the elephant.ā€™ā€
