Tatiyaadhammasutta Bad Principles (3rd)

ā€œAdhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; ā€œMendicants, you should know bad principles and good principles.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. And you should know bad results and good results.

AdhammaƱca viditvā dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvā atthaƱca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paį¹­ipajjitabbanā€ti. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Idaṁ vatvāna sugato uṭṭhāyāsanā vihāraṁ pāvisi. When he had spoken, the Holy One got up from his seat and entered his dwelling.

Atha kho tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ acirapakkantassa bhagavato etadahosi: Soon after the Buddha left, those mendicants considered,

ā€œidaṁ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œThe Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail.

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca;

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca.

AdhammaƱca viditvā dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvā atthaƱca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paį¹­ipajjitabban’ti.

Ko nu kho imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ vibhajeyyÄā€ti? Who can explain in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha?ā€

Atha kho tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ etadahosi: Then they considered,

ā€œayaṁ kho āyasmā ānando satthu ceva saṁvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṁ sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ. ā€œThis Venerable Ānanda is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

Pahoti cāyasmā ānando imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ vibhajituṁ. He is capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

YannÅ«na mayaṁ yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyāma. Let’s go to him, and ask him about this matter.

Yathā no āyasmā ānando byākarissati tathā naṁ dhāressāmÄā€ti. As he answers, so we’ll remember it.ā€

Atha kho te bhikkhÅ« yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodiṁsu. Then those mendicants went to Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«diṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavocuṁ: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side. They told him what had happened, and said,

ā€œIdaṁ kho no, āvuso ānanda, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho:

ā€˜adhammo ca …pe…

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabban’ti.

Tesaṁ no, āvuso, amhākaṁ acirapakkantassa bhagavato etadahosi:

ā€˜idaṁ kho no, āvuso, bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho—

adhammo ca …pe…

tathā paṭipajjitabbanti.

Ko nu kho imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ vibhajeyyā’ti?

Tesaṁ no, āvuso, amhākaṁ etadahosi:

ā€˜ayaṁ kho āyasmā ānando satthu ceva saṁvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṁ sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ.

Pahoti cāyasmā ānando imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ vibhajituṁ.

YannÅ«na mayaṁ yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kameyyāma; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyāma.

Yathā no āyasmā ānando byākarissati tathā naṁ dhāressāmā’ti.

Vibhajatu āyasmā ānandoā€ti. ā€œMay Venerable Ānanda please explain this.ā€

ā€œSeyyathāpi, āvuso, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesÄ« sārapariyesanaṁ caramāno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹­į¹­hato sāravato atikkammeva mÅ«laṁ atikkamma khandhaṁ sākhāpalāse sāraṁ pariyesitabbaṁ maƱƱeyya; ā€œReverends, suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood he’d come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But he’d pass over the roots and trunk, imagining that the heartwood should be sought in the branches and leaves.

evaṁsampadamidaṁ āyasmantānaṁ satthari sammukhībhūte taṁ bhagavantaṁ atisitvā amhe etamatthaṁ paṭipucchitabbaṁ maññatha. Such is the consequence for the venerables. Though you were face to face with the Buddha, you overlooked him, imagining that you should ask me about this matter.

So hāvuso, bhagavā jānaṁ jānāti passaṁ passati, cakkhubhÅ«to ñāṇabhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. For he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

So ceva panetassa kālo ahosi yaṁ tumhe bhagavantaṁyeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha. That was the time to approach the Buddha and ask about this matter.

Yathā vo bhagavā byākareyya tathā naṁ dhāreyyāthÄā€ti. You should have remembered it in line with the Buddha’s answer.ā€

ā€œAddhāvuso ānanda, bhagavā jānaṁ jānāti passaṁ passati cakkhubhÅ«to ñāṇabhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattā pavattā atthassa ninnetā amatassa dātā dhammassāmÄ« tathāgato. ā€œCertainly he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One.

So ceva panetassa kālo ahosi yaṁ mayaṁ bhagavantaṁyeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyāma, That was the time to approach the Buddha and ask about this matter.

yathā no bhagavā byākareyya tathā naṁ dhāreyyāma. We should have remembered it in line with the Buddha’s answer.

Api cāyasmā ānando satthu ceva saṁvaṇṇito sambhāvito ca viññūnaṁ sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ. Still, Venerable Ānanda is praised by the Buddha and esteemed by his sensible spiritual companions.

Pahoti cāyasmā ānando imassa bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa vitthārena atthaṁ vibhajituṁ. You are capable of explaining in detail the meaning of this brief summary recital given by the Buddha.

Vibhajatāyasmā ānando agaruṁ katvÄā€ti. Please explain this, if it’s no trouble.ā€

ā€œTenahāvuso, suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThen listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato ānandassa paccassosuṁ. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ they replied.

Athāyasmā ānando etadavoca: Ānanda said this:

ā€œYaṁ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho: ā€œReverends, the Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; ā€˜You should know bad principles and good principles.

anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. And you should know bad results and good results.

AdhammaƱca viditvā dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvā atthaƱca yathā dhammo yathā attho tathā paį¹­ipajjitabban’ti. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.’

Katamo cāvuso, adhammo, katamo ca dhammo, katamo ca anattho, katamo ca attho? So what are bad principles? What are good principles? What are bad results? And what are good results?

Micchādiṭṭhi, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong view is a bad principle.

sammādiṭṭhi dhammo; Right view is a good principle.

ye ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayā aneke pāpakā akusalā dhammā sambhavanti, ayaṁ anattho; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong view are bad results.

sammādiṭṭhipaccayā ca aneke kusalā dhammā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti, ayaṁ attho. And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of right view are good results.

Micchāsaį¹…kappo, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong thought is a bad principle.

sammāsaį¹…kappo dhammo … Right thought is a good principle. …

micchāvācā, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong speech is a bad principle.

sammāvācā dhammo … Right speech is a good principle. …

micchākammanto, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong action is a bad principle.

sammākammanto dhammo … Right action is a good principle. …

micchāājīvo, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong livelihood is a bad principle.

sammāājÄ«vo dhammo … Right livelihood is a good principle. …

micchāvāyāmo, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong effort is a bad principle.

sammāvāyāmo dhammo … Right effort is a good principle. …

micchāsati, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong mindfulness is a bad principle.

sammāsati dhammo … Right mindfulness is a good principle. …

micchāsamādhi, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong immersion is a bad principle.

sammāsamādhi dhammo … Right immersion is a good principle. …

micchāñāṇaṁ, āvuso, adhammo; Wrong knowledge is a bad principle.

Ayaṁ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho: The Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca …pe… ā€˜You should know bad principles and good principles …

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabban’ti, imassa kho ahaṁ, āvuso, bhagavatā saį¹…khittena uddesassa uddiį¹­į¹­hassa vitthārena atthaṁ avibhattassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmi. and practice accordingly.’ And this is how I understand the detailed meaning of this summary recital.

Ākaį¹…khamānā ca pana tumhe, āvuso, bhagavantaṁyeva upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha. If you wish, you may go to the Buddha and ask him about this.

Yathā vo bhagavā byākaroti tathā naṁ dhāreyyāthÄā€ti. You should remember it in line with the Buddha’s answer.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« āyasmato ānandassa bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«diṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ said those mendicants, approving and agreeing with what Ānanda said. Then they rose from their seats and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then they said:

ā€œYaṁ kho no bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho:

ā€˜adhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo …pe…

tathā paį¹­ipajjitabban’ti.

Tesaṁ no, bhante, amhākaṁ acirapakkantassa bhagavato etadahosi:

ā€˜idaṁ kho no, āvuso, bhagavā saį¹…khittena uddesaṁ uddisitvā vitthārena atthaṁ avibhajitvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā vihāraṁ paviį¹­į¹­ho—

Yathā no āyasmā ānando byākarissati tathā naṁ dhāressāmā’ti.

Atha kho mayaṁ, bhante, yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaį¹…kamimhā; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etamatthaṁ apucchimhā. ā€œSir, we went to Ānanda and asked him about this matter.

Tesaṁ no, bhante, āyasmatā ānandena imehi ākārehi imehi padehi imehi byaƱjanehi attho suvibhattoā€ti. And Ānanda clearly explained the meaning to us in this manner, with these words and phrases.ā€

ā€œSādhu sādhu, bhikkhave. ā€œGood, good, mendicants!

Paį¹‡įøito, bhikkhave, ānando. Ānanda is astute,

MahāpaƱƱo, bhikkhave, ānando. he has great wisdom.

MaƱcepi tumhe, bhikkhave, upasaį¹…kamitvā etamatthaṁ paį¹­ipuccheyyātha, ahampi cetaṁ evamevaṁ byākareyyaṁ yathā taṁ ānandena byākataṁ. If you came to me and asked this question, I would answer it in exactly the same way as Ānanda.

Eso ceva tassa attho evaƱca naṁ dhāreyyāthÄā€ti. That is what it means, and that’s how you should remember it.ā€
