Taṇhāsutta Craving

ā€œPurimā, bhikkhave, koį¹­i na paƱƱāyati bhavataṇhāya: ā€˜ito pubbe bhavataṇhā nāhosi, atha pacchā samabhavī’ti. ā€œMendicants, it is said that no first point of craving for continued existence is evident, before which there was no craving for continued existence, and afterwards it came to be.

EvaƱcetaṁ, bhikkhave, vuccati, atha ca pana paƱƱāyati: ā€˜idappaccayā bhavataṇhā’ti. And yet it is evident that there is a specific condition for craving for continued existence.

Bhavataṇhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that craving for continued existence is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro bhavataṇhāya? And what is the fuel for craving for continued existence?

ā€˜Avijjā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Ignorance.’

Avijjampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that ignorance is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro avijjāya? And what is the fuel for ignorance?

ā€˜PaƱca nÄ«varaṇā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜The five hindrances.’

PaƱca nÄ«varaṇepāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre. I say that the five hindrances are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro paƱcannaṁ nÄ«varaṇānaṁ? And what is the fuel for the five hindrances?

ā€˜Tīṇi duccaritānī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜The three kinds of misconduct.’

Tīṇipāhaṁ, bhikkhave, duccaritāni sāhārāni vadāmi, no anāhārāni. I say that the three kinds of misconduct are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro tiṇṇannaṁ duccaritānaṁ? And what is the fuel for the three kinds of misconduct?

ā€˜Indriyaasaṁvaro’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Lack of sense restraint.’

Indriyaasaṁvarampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that lack of sense restraint is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro indriyaasaṁvarassa? And what is the fuel for lack of sense restraint?

ā€˜AsatāsampajaƱƱan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Lack of mindfulness and situational awareness.’

AsatāsampajaƱƱampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that lack of mindfulness and situational awareness is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro asatā sampajaƱƱassa? And what is the fuel for lack of mindfulness and situational awareness?

ā€˜Ayonisomanasikāro’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Irrational application of mind.’

Ayonisomanasikārampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that irrational application of mind is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro ayonisomanasikārassa? And what is the fuel for irrational application of mind?

ā€˜Assaddhiyan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Lack of faith.’

Assaddhiyampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that lack of faith is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro assaddhiyassa? And what is the fuel for lack of faith?

ā€˜Assaddhammassavanan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Listening to an untrue teaching.’

Assaddhammassavanampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that listening to an untrue teaching is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro assaddhammassavanassa? And what is the fuel for listening to an untrue teaching?

ā€˜Asappurisasaṁsevo’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Associating with untrue persons.’

Iti kho, bhikkhave, asappurisasaṁsevo paripÅ«ro assaddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«reti, assaddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«raṁ assaddhiyaṁ paripÅ«reti, assaddhiyaṁ paripÅ«raṁ ayonisomanasikāraṁ paripÅ«reti, ayonisomanasikāro paripÅ«ro asatāsampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«reti, asatāsampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«raṁ indriyaasaṁvaraṁ paripÅ«reti, indriyaasaṁvaro paripÅ«ro tīṇi duccaritāni paripÅ«reti, tīṇi duccaritāni paripÅ«rāni paƱca nÄ«varaṇe paripÅ«renti, paƱca nÄ«varaṇā paripÅ«rā avijjaṁ paripÅ«renti, avijjā paripÅ«rā bhavataṇhaṁ paripÅ«reti; In this way, when the factor of associating with untrue persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to an untrue teaching. When the factor of listening to an untrue teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of lack of faith … irrational application of mind … lack of mindfulness and situational awareness … lack of sense restraint …the three kinds of misconduct … the five hindrances … ignorance. When ignorance is fulfilled, it fulfills craving for continued existence.

evametissā bhavataṇhāya āhāro hoti, evaƱca pāripÅ«ri. That’s the fuel for craving for continued existence, and that’s how it’s fulfilled.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante taṁ udakaṁ yathāninnaṁ pavattamānaṁ pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripÅ«reti, pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripÅ«rā kusobbhe paripÅ«renti, kusobbhā paripÅ«rā mahāsobbhe paripÅ«renti, mahāsobbhā paripÅ«rā kunnadiyo paripÅ«renti, kunnadiyo paripÅ«rā mahānadiyo paripÅ«renti, mahānadiyo paripÅ«rā mahāsamuddaṁ sāgaraṁ paripÅ«renti; It’s like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean.

evametassa mahāsamuddassa sāgarassa āhāro hoti, evaƱca pāripÅ«ri. That’s the fuel for the ocean, and that’s how it’s filled up.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, asappurisasaṁsevo paripÅ«ro assaddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«reti, assaddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«raṁ assaddhiyaṁ paripÅ«reti, assaddhiyaṁ paripÅ«raṁ ayonisomanasikāraṁ paripÅ«reti, ayonisomanasikāro paripÅ«ro asatāsampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«reti, asatāsampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«raṁ indriyaasaṁvaraṁ paripÅ«reti, indriyaasaṁvaro paripÅ«ro tīṇi duccaritāni paripÅ«reti, tīṇi duccaritāni paripÅ«rāni paƱca nÄ«varaṇe paripÅ«renti, paƱca nÄ«varaṇā paripÅ«rā avijjaṁ paripÅ«renti, avijjā paripÅ«rā bhavataṇhaṁ paripÅ«reti; In the same way, when the factor of associating with untrue persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to an untrue teaching. When the factor of listening to an untrue teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of lack of faith … irrational application of mind … lack of mindfulness and situational awareness … lack of sense restraint …the three kinds of misconduct … the five hindrances … ignorance. When ignorance is fulfilled, it fulfills craving for continued existence.

Vijjāvimuttimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that knowledge and freedom are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro vijjāvimuttiyā? And what is the fuel for knowledge and freedom?

ā€˜Satta bojjhaį¹…gā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜The seven awakening factors.’

Sattapāhaṁ, bhikkhave, bojjhaį¹…ge sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre. I say that the seven awakening factors are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro sattannaṁ bojjhaį¹…gānaṁ? And what is the fuel for the seven awakening factors?

ā€˜Cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜The four kinds of mindfulness meditation.’

Cattāropāhaṁ, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hāne sāhāre vadāmi, no anāhāre. I say that the four kinds of mindfulness meditation are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro catunnaṁ satipaṭṭhānānaṁ? And what is the fuel for the four kinds of mindfulness meditation?

ā€˜Tīṇi sucaritānī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜The three kinds of good conduct.’

Tīṇipāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sucaritāni sāhārāni vadāmi, no anāhārāni. I say that the three kinds of good conduct are fueled by something, they’re not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro tiṇṇannaṁ sucaritānaṁ? And what is the fuel for the three kinds of good conduct?

ā€˜Indriyasaṁvaro’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Sense restraint.’

Indriyasaṁvarampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that sense restraint is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro indriyasaṁvarassa? And what is the fuel for sense restraint?

ā€˜SatisampajaƱƱan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Mindfulness and situational awareness.’

SatisampajaƱƱampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that mindfulness and situational awareness is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro satisampajaƱƱassa? And what is the fuel for mindfulness and situational awareness?

ā€˜Yonisomanasikāro’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Rational application of mind.’

Yonisomanasikārampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that rational application of mind is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro yonisomanasikārassa? And what is the fuel for rational application of mind?

ā€˜Saddhā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Faith.’

Saddhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that faith is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro saddhāya? And what is the fuel for faith?

ā€˜Saddhammassavanan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Listening to the true teaching.’

Saddhammassavanampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, sāhāraṁ vadāmi, no anāhāraṁ. I say that listening to the true teaching is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled.

Ko cāhāro saddhammassavanassa? And what is the fuel for listening to the true teaching?

ā€˜Sappurisasaṁsevo’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. You should say: ā€˜Associating with true persons.’

Iti kho, bhikkhave, sappurisasaṁsevo paripÅ«ro saddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«reti, saddhammassavanaṁ paripÅ«raṁ saddhaṁ paripÅ«reti, saddhā paripÅ«rā yonisomanasikāraṁ paripÅ«reti, yonisomanasikāro paripÅ«ro satisampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«reti, satisampajaƱƱaṁ paripÅ«raṁ indriyasaṁvaraṁ paripÅ«reti, indriyasaṁvaro paripÅ«ro tīṇi sucaritāni paripÅ«reti, tīṇi sucaritāni paripÅ«rāni cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hāne paripÅ«renti, cattāro satipaį¹­į¹­hānā paripÅ«rā satta bojjhaį¹…ge paripÅ«renti, satta bojjhaį¹…gā paripÅ«rā vijjāvimuttiṁ paripÅ«renti; In this way, when the factor of associating with true persons is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of listening to the true teaching. When the factor of listening to the true teaching is fulfilled, it fulfills the factor of faith … rational application of mind … mindfulness and situational awareness … sense restraint …the three kinds of good conduct … the four kinds of mindfulness meditation … the seven awakening factors. When the seven awakening factors are fulfilled, they fulfill knowledge and freedom.

evametissā vijjāvimuttiyā āhāro hoti, evaƱca pāripÅ«ri. That’s the fuel for knowledge and freedom, and that’s how it’s fulfilled.
