Paį¹­hamaānandasutta With Ānanda (1st)

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜saį¹…ghabhedo saį¹…ghabhedo’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of ā€˜schism in the Saį¹…gha’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, saį¹…gho bhinno hotÄ«ā€ti? How is schism in the Saį¹…gha defined?ā€

ā€œIdhānanda, bhikkhÅ« adhammaṁ dhammoti dÄ«penti, dhammaṁ adhammoti dÄ«penti, avinayaṁ vinayoti dÄ«penti …pe… ā€œÄ€nanda, it’s when a mendicant explains what is not the teaching as the teaching …

paññattaṁ tathāgatena apaññattaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpenti. and what was prescribed by the Realized One as not prescribed by the Realized One.

Te imehi dasahi vatthūhi avakassanti apakassanti āveni kammāni karonti āveni pātimokkhaṁ uddisanti. On these ten grounds they split off and go their own way. They perform legal acts autonomously and recite the monastic code autonomously.

Ettāvatā kho, ānanda, saį¹…gho bhinno hotÄ«ā€ti. That is how schism in the Saį¹…gha is defined.ā€

ā€œSamaggaṁ pana, bhante, saį¹…ghaṁ bhinditvā kiṁ so pasavatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut sir, what does someone who has split a harmonious Saį¹…gha create?ā€

ā€œKappaį¹­į¹­hikaṁ, ānanda, kibbisaṁ pasavatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThey create a sin that lasts for an eon.ā€

ā€œKiṁ pana, bhante, kappaį¹­į¹­hikaṁ kibbisanā€ti? ā€œBut sir, what is the sin that lasts for an eon?ā€

ā€œKappaṁ, ānanda, nirayamhi paccatÄ«tiā€”ā€œThey burn in hell for an eon, Ānanda.

Āpāyiko nerayiko, A schismatic remains for the eon

Kappaį¹­į¹­ho saį¹…ghabhedako; in a place of loss, in hell.

Vaggarato adhammaį¹­į¹­ho, Taking a stand against the teaching,

Yogakkhemā padhaṁsati; favoring factions, they ruin their sanctuary.

Saį¹…ghaṁ samaggaṁ bhinditvā, After causing schism in a harmonious Saį¹…gha,

Kappaṁ nirayamhi paccatÄ«ā€ti. they burn in hell for an eon.ā€
