Upālisutta With Upāli

Atha kho āyasmā upāli yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā upāli bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Upāli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œkati nu kho, bhante, atthavase paį¹­icca tathāgatena sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paƱƱattaṁ, pātimokkhaṁ uddiį¹­į¹­hanā€ti? ā€œSir, for how many reasons did the Realized One lay down training rules for his disciples and recite the monastic code?ā€

ā€œDasa kho, upāli, atthavase paį¹­icca tathāgatena sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paƱƱattaṁ, pātimokkhaṁ uddiį¹­į¹­haṁ. ā€œUpāli, the Realized One laid down training rules for his disciples and recited the monastic code for ten reasons.

Saį¹…ghasuį¹­į¹­hutāya, saį¹…ghaphāsutāya, dummaį¹…kÅ«naṁ puggalānaṁ niggahāya, pesalānaṁ bhikkhÅ«naṁ phāsuvihārāya, diį¹­į¹­hadhammikānaṁ āsavānaṁ saṁvarāya, samparāyikānaṁ āsavānaṁ paį¹­ighātāya, appasannānaṁ pasādāya, pasannānaṁ bhiyyobhāvāya, saddhammaį¹­į¹­hitiyā, vinayānuggahāya—For the well-being of the Saį¹…gha and for the comfort of the Saį¹…gha. For keeping difficult persons in check and for the comfort of good-hearted mendicants. For restraining defilements that affect this life and protecting against defilements that affect lives to come. For inspiring confidence in those without it, and increasing confidence in those who have it. For the continuation of the true teaching and the support of the training.

ime kho, upāli, dasa atthavase paį¹­icca tathāgatena sāvakānaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paƱƱattaṁ, pātimokkhaṁ uddiį¹­į¹­hanā€ti. The Realized One laid down training rules for his disciples and recited the monastic code for these ten reasons.ā€
