Jhānasutta Inspiring All Around: the Absorptions

ā€œSaddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti, no ca sÄ«lavā; ā€œMendicants, a mendicant is faithful but not ethical.

evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. So they’re incomplete in that respect,

Tena taṁ aį¹…gaṁ paripÅ«retabbaṁ: and should fulfill it, thinking:

ā€˜kintāhaṁ saddho ca assaṁ, sÄ«lavā cā’ti. ā€˜How can I become faithful and ethical?’

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti sÄ«lavā ca, evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. When the mendicant is faithful and ethical, they’re complete in that respect.

Saddho ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu hoti sÄ«lavā ca, no ca bahussuto …pe… A mendicant is faithful and ethical, but not learned. …

bahussuto ca, no ca dhammakathiko … they’re not a Dhamma speaker …

dhammakathiko ca, no ca parisāvacaro … they don’t frequent assemblies …

parisāvacaro ca, no ca visārado parisāya dhammaṁ deseti … they don’t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance …

visārado ca parisāya dhammaṁ deseti, no ca vinayadharo … they’re not an expert in the monastic law …

vinayadharo ca, no ca āraƱƱiko pantasenāsano … they don’t stay in the wilderness, in remote lodgings …

āraƱƱiko ca pantasenāsano, no ca catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ« … they don’t get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty …

catunnaƱca jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«, no ca āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. they don’t realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena aparipÅ«ro hoti. So they’re incomplete in that respect,

Tena taṁ aį¹…gaṁ paripÅ«retabbaṁ: and should fulfill it, thinking:

ā€˜kintāhaṁ saddho ca assaṁ, sÄ«lavā ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisāvacaro ca, visārado ca parisāya dhammaṁ deseyyaṁ, vinayadharo ca, āraƱƱiko ca pantasenāsano, catunnaƱca jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhÄ« assaṁ akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«, āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihareyyan’ti. ā€˜How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the four absorptions when they want, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements?’

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, sÄ«lavā ca, bahussuto ca, dhammakathiko ca, parisāvacaro ca, visārado ca parisāya dhammaṁ deseti, vinayadharo ca, āraƱƱiko ca pantasenāsano, catunnaƱca jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhÄ« hoti akicchalābhÄ« akasiralābhÄ«, āsavānaƱca khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati; When they’re faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the four absorptions when they want, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements,

evaṁ so tenaį¹…gena paripÅ«ro hoti. they’re complete in that respect.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dasahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu samantapāsādiko ca hoti sabbākāraparipÅ«ro cāā€ti. A mendicant who has these ten qualities is impressive all around, and is complete in every respect.ā€
