Anupubbanirodhasutta Progressive Cessation

ā€œā€˜Anupubbanirodho, anupubbanirodho’ti, āvuso, vuccati. ā€œReverend, they speak of ā€˜progressive cessation’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatÄā€ti? What is the progressive cessation that the Buddha spoke of?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe… paį¹­hamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. ā€œFirst, take a mendicant who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and remains in the first absorption.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatā pariyāyena …pe…. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a qualified sense. …

Puna caparaṁ, āvuso, bhikkhu sabbaso nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati, paƱƱāya cassa disvā āsavā parikkhīṇā honti. Furthermore, take a mendicant who, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, enters and remains in the cessation of perception and feeling. And, having seen with wisdom, their defilements come to an end.

Ettāvatāpi kho, āvuso, anupubbanirodho vutto bhagavatā nippariyāyenÄā€ti. To this extent the Buddha spoke of progressive cessation in a definitive sense.ā€
