Koį¹­į¹­hikasutta With Koį¹­į¹­hita

Atha kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṁ sammodi. Then Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Sāriputta:

ā€œkiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ diį¹­į¹­hadhammavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ samparāyavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced in this life be experienced by me in lives to come’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not, reverend.ā€

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ samparāyavedanÄ«yaṁ taṁ me kammaṁ diį¹­į¹­hadhammavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced in lives to come be experienced by me in this life’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ sukhavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ dukkhavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced as pleasant be experienced by me as painful’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso, sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ dukkhavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ sukhavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced as painful be experienced by me as pleasant’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ paripakkavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ aparipakkavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced when ripe be experienced by me when unripe’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ aparipakkavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ paripakkavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced when unripe be experienced by me when ripe’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ bahuvedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ appavedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced a lot be experienced by me a little’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ appavedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ bahuvedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced a little be experienced by me a lot’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ vedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ avedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œIs the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds to be experienced by me be not experienced’?ā€

ā€œNo hidaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œCertainly not.ā€

ā€œKiṁ panāvuso sāriputta, ā€˜yaṁ kammaṁ avedanÄ«yaṁ, taṁ me kammaṁ vedanÄ«yaṁ hotū’ti, etassa atthāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ā€˜May deeds not to be experienced be experienced’?ā€

ā€œYaṁ khvassa, āvuso, aƱƱātaṁ adiį¹­į¹­haṁ appattaṁ asacchikataṁ anabhisametaṁ, tassa ñāṇāya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ti. ā€œReverend, the spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend that which is unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended.ā€

Kiṁ panassāvuso, aƱƱātaṁ adiį¹­į¹­haṁ appattaṁ asacchikataṁ anabhisametaṁ, yassa ñāṇāya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ti? ā€œBut what is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended?ā€

ā€˜Idaṁ dukkhan’ti khvassa, āvuso, aƱƱātaṁ adiį¹­į¹­haṁ appattaṁ asacchikataṁ anabhisametaṁ. ā€œā€˜This is suffering.’ …

Tassa ñāṇāya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussati.

ā€˜Ayaṁ dukkhasamudayo’ti khvassa, āvuso …pe… ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodho’ti khvassa, āvuso …pe… ā€˜This is the origin of suffering.’ … ā€˜This is the cessation of suffering.’ …

Tassa ñāṇāya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussati.

Idaṁ khvassa, āvuso, aññātaṁ adiṭṭhaṁ appattaṁ asacchikataṁ anabhisametaṁ. This is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended.

Tassa ñāṇāya dassanāya pattiyā sacchikiriyāya abhisamayāya bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatÄ«ā€ti. The spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend this.ā€
