VÄseį¹į¹hasutta With VÄseį¹į¹ha on the Sabbath
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
Atha kho vÄseį¹į¹ho upÄsako yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho vÄseį¹į¹haį¹ upÄsakaį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: Then the layman VÄseį¹į¹ha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
āaį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgato, vÄseį¹į¹ha, uposatho upavuttho mahapphalo hoti ā¦peā¦ āVÄseį¹į¹ha, the observance of the sabbath with its eight factors is very fruitful and beneficial and brilliant and bountiful ā¦
aninditÄ saggamupenti į¹hÄnanāti. blameless, they go to a heavenly place.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, vÄseį¹į¹ho upÄsako bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, VÄseį¹į¹ha said to the Buddha:
āpiyÄ me, bhante, ƱÄtisÄlohitÄ aį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, piyÄnampi me assa ƱÄtisÄlohitÄnaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya. āIf my loved onesārelatives and kināwere to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.
Sabbe cepi, bhante, khattiyÄ aį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa khattiyÄnaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya. Sabbe cepi, bhante, brÄhmaį¹Ä ā¦peā¦ vessÄ ā¦ suddÄ aį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sabbesampissa suddÄnaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄyÄāti. If all the aristocrats, brahmins, peasants, and menials were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.ā
āEvametaį¹, vÄseį¹į¹ha, evametaį¹, vÄseį¹į¹ha. āThatās so true, VÄseį¹į¹ha! Thatās so true, VÄseį¹į¹ha!

Sadevako cepi, vÄseį¹į¹ha, loko samÄrako sabrahmako sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Ä« pajÄ sadevamanussÄ aį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, sadevakassapissa lokassa samÄrakassa sabrahmakassa sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya. If the whole worldāwith its gods, MÄras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humansāwere to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.
Ime cepi, vÄseį¹į¹ha, mahÄsÄlÄ aį¹į¹haį¹
gasamannÄgataį¹ uposathaį¹ upavaseyyuį¹, imesampissa mahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄya (ā¦). If these great sal trees were to observe this sabbath with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happinessāif they were sentient.
Ko pana vÄdo manussabhÅ«tassÄāti. How much more then a human being!ā
