āAį¹į¹himÄni, bhikkhave, dÄnavatthÅ«ni. āMendicants, there are these eight grounds for giving.

ChandÄ dÄnaį¹ deti, dosÄ dÄnaį¹ deti, mohÄ dÄnaį¹ deti, bhayÄ dÄnaį¹ deti, ādinnapubbaį¹ katapubbaį¹ pitupitÄmahehi, nÄrahÄmi porÄį¹aį¹ kulavaį¹saį¹ hÄpetunāti dÄnaį¹ deti, āimÄhaį¹ dÄnaį¹ datvÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjissÄmÄ«āti dÄnaį¹ deti, āimaį¹ me dÄnaį¹ dadato cittaį¹ pasÄ«dati, attamanatÄ somanassaį¹ upajÄyatÄ«āti dÄnaį¹ deti, cittÄlaį¹

Or they give thinking, āGiving was practiced by my father and my fatherās father. It would not be right for me to abandon this family tradition.ā Or they give thinking, āAfter Iāve given this gift, when my body breaks up, after death, Iāll be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.ā Or they give thinking, āWhen giving this gift my mind becomes clear, and I become happy and joyful.ā Or they give a gift thinking, āThis is an adornment and requisite for the mind.ā
ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, aį¹į¹ha dÄnavatthÅ«nÄ«āti. These are the eight grounds for giving.ā
