Paṭhamadānasutta Giving (1st)

ā€œAį¹­į¹­himāni, bhikkhave, dānāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these eight gifts.

Katamāni aṭṭha? What eight?

Āsajja dānaṁ deti, A person might give a gift after insulting the recipient.

bhayā dānaṁ deti, Or they give out of fear.

ā€˜adāsi me’ti dānaṁ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜They gave to me.’

ā€˜dassati me’ti dānaṁ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜They’ll give to me.’

ā€˜sāhu dānan’ti dānaṁ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜It’s good to give.’

ā€˜ahaṁ pacāmi, ime na pacanti; nārahāmi pacanto apacantānaṁ dānaṁ adātun’ti dānaṁ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜I cook, they don’t. It wouldn’t be right for me to not give to them.’

ā€˜imaṁ me dānaṁ dadato kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchatī’ti dānaṁ deti, Or they give thinking, ā€˜By giving this gift I’ll get a good reputation.’

cittālaį¹…kāracittaparikkhāratthaṁ dānaṁ deti. Or they give thinking, ā€˜This is an adornment and requisite for the mind.’

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, aį¹­į¹­ha dānānÄ«ā€ti. These are the eight gifts.ā€
