Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
Atha kho mahÄnÄmo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄnÄmo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then MahÄnÄma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
ākittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, upÄsako hotÄ«āti? āSir, how is a lay follower defined?ā
āYato kho, mahÄnÄma, buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹
ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti; āMahÄnÄma, when youāve gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹

ettÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako hotÄ«āti. youāre considered to be a lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako sÄ«lavÄ hotÄ«āti? āBut how is an ethical lay follower defined?ā
āYato kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹ivirato hoti, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti; āWhen a lay follower doesnāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants,
ettÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako sÄ«lavÄ hotÄ«āti. theyāre considered to be an ethical lay follower.ā
āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako attahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti, no parahitÄyÄāti? āBut how do we define a lay follower who is practicing to benefit themselves, not others?ā
āYato kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako attanÄva saddhÄsampanno hoti, no paraį¹ saddhÄsampadÄya samÄdapeti; āA lay follower is accomplished in faith, but doesnāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva sÄ«lasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ sÄ«lasampadÄya samÄdapeti; Theyāre accomplished in ethical conduct, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva cÄgasampanno hoti, no paraį¹ cÄgasampadÄya samÄdapeti; Theyāre accomplished in generosity, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dassanakÄmo hoti, no paraį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dassane samÄdapeti; They like to see the mendicants, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva saddhammaį¹ sotukÄmo hoti, no paraį¹ saddhammassavane samÄdapeti; They like to hear the true teaching, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva sutÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ dhÄraį¹ajÄtiko hoti, no paraį¹ dhammadhÄraį¹Äya samÄdapeti; They readily memorize the teachings theyāve heard, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva sutÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ atthÅ«paparikkhitÄ hoti, no paraį¹ atthÅ«paparikkhÄya samÄdapeti; They examine the meaning of the teachings theyāve memorized, but donāt encourage others to do the same.
attanÄva atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno hoti, no paraį¹ dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipattiyÄ samÄdapeti. Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice accordingly, but they donāt encourage others to do the same.
EttÄvatÄ kho, mahÄnÄma, upÄsako attahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti, no parahitÄyÄāti. Thatās how we define a lay follower who is practicing to benefit themselves, not others.ā
