Paį¹hamasattakasutta Non-Decline for Mendicants (1st)
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
āsatta vo, bhikkhave, aparihÄniye dhamme desessÄmi. āMendicants, I will teach you these seven principles that prevent decline.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āKatame ca, bhikkhave, satta aparihÄniyÄ dhammÄ? āWhat are the seven principles that prevent decline?
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« abhiį¹haį¹ sannipÄtÄ bhavissanti sannipÄtabahulÄ; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants meet frequently and have many meetings, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« samaggÄ sannipatissanti, samaggÄ vuį¹į¹hahissanti, samaggÄ saį¹
ghakaraį¹Ä«yÄni karissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants meet in harmony, leave in harmony, and carry on their business in harmony, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« apaƱƱattaį¹ na paƱƱÄpessanti, paƱƱattaį¹ na samucchindissanti, yathÄpaƱƱattesu sikkhÄpadesu samÄdÄya vattissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants donāt make new decrees or abolish existing decrees, but undertake and follow the training rules as they have been decreed, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« ye te bhikkhÅ« therÄ rattaĆ±Ć±Å« cirapabbajitÄ saį¹

ghapariį¹ÄyakÄ te sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mÄnessanti pÅ«jessanti, tesaƱca sotabbaį¹ maƱƱissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the senior mendicantsāof long standing, long gone forth, fathers and leaders of the Saį¹
ghaāand think them worth listening to, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« uppannÄya taį¹hÄya ponobhavikÄya na vasaį¹ gacchissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants donāt fall under the sway of arisen craving for future lives, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« ÄraƱƱakesu senÄsanesu sÄpekkhÄ bhavissanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants take care to live in wilderness lodgings, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« paccattaƱƱeva satiį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpessanti: ākinti anÄgatÄ ca pesalÄ sabrahmacÄrÄ« Ägaccheyyuį¹, ÄgatÄ ca pesalÄ sabrahmacÄrÄ« phÄsuį¹ vihareyyunāti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄni. As long as the mendicants individually establish mindfulness, so that more good-hearted spiritual companions might come, and those that have already come may live comfortably, they can expect growth, not decline.
YÄvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, ime satta aparihÄniyÄ dhammÄ bhikkhÅ«su į¹hassanti, imesu ca sattasu aparihÄniyesu dhammesu bhikkhÅ« sandississanti; vuddhiyeva, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ«naį¹ pÄį¹ikaį¹
khÄ, no parihÄnÄ«āti. As long as these seven principles that prevent decline last among the mendicants, and as long as the mendicants are seen following them, they can expect growth, not decline.ā
