Khattiyasutta Aristocrats

Atha kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. And then the brahmin Jānussoṇi went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œKhattiyā, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œAristocrats, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œKhattiyā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā balādhiį¹­į¹­hānā pathavÄ«bhinivesā issariyapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œAristocrats, brahmin, have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re fixated on power. They insist on territory. Their ultimate goal is authority.ā€

ā€œBrāhmaṇā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œBrahmins, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œBrāhmaṇā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā mantādhiį¹­į¹­hānā yaƱƱābhinivesā brahmalokapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œBrahmins have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re fixated on the hymns. They insist on sacrifice. Their ultimate goal is the realm of divinity.ā€

ā€œGahapatikā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œHouseholders, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œGahapatikā kho, brāhmaṇa, bhogādhippāyā paññūpavicārā sippādhiį¹­į¹­hānā kammantābhinivesā niį¹­į¹­hitakammantapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œHouseholders have wealth as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re fixated on their profession. They insist on work. Their ultimate goal is to complete their work.ā€

ā€œItthÄ« pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œWomen, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œItthÄ« kho, brāhmaṇa, purisādhippāyā alaį¹…kārÅ«pavicārā puttādhiį¹­į¹­hānā asapattÄ«bhinivesā issariyapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œWomen have a man as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with adornments. They’re fixated on their children. They insist on being without a co-wife. Their ultimate goal is authority.ā€

ā€œCorā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œBandits, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œCorā kho, brāhmaṇa, ādānādhippāyā gahanÅ«pavicārā satthādhiį¹­į¹­hānā andhakārābhinivesā adassanapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œBandits have theft as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with a hiding place. They’re fixated on their sword. They insist on darkness. Their ultimate goal is invisibility.ā€

ā€œSamaṇā pana, bho gotama, kiṁadhippāyā, kiṁupavicārā, kiṁadhiį¹­į¹­hānā, kiṁabhinivesā, kiṁpariyosānÄā€ti? ā€œAscetics, worthy Gotama, have what as their ambition? What is their preoccupation? What are they fixated on? What do they insist on? What is their ultimate goal?ā€

ā€œSamaṇā kho, brāhmaṇa, khantisoraccādhippāyā paññūpavicārā sÄ«lādhiį¹­į¹­hānā ākiƱcaƱƱābhinivesā nibbānapariyosānÄā€ti. ā€œAscetics have patience and gentleness as their ambition. They’re preoccupied with wisdom. They’re fixated on ethical conduct. They insist on owning nothing. Their ultimate goal is extinguishment.ā€

ā€œAcchariyaṁ, bho gotama, abbhutaṁ, bho gotama. ā€œIt’s incredible, worthy Gotama, it’s amazing!

Khattiyānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti adhippāyaƱca upavicāraƱca adhiį¹­į¹­hānaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosānaƱca. Brāhmaṇānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti …pe… gahapatÄ«nampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … itthÄ«nampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … corānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti … samaṇānampi bhavaṁ gotamo jānāti adhippāyaƱca upavicāraƱca adhiį¹­į¹­hānaƱca abhinivesaƱca pariyosānaƱca. The worthy Gotama knows the ambition, preoccupation, fixation, insistence, and ultimate goal of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, women, bandits, and ascetics.

Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… Excellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! …

upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
