Atha kho aƱƱataro brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
āāsandiį¹į¹hiko dhammo, sandiį¹į¹hiko dhammoāti, bho gotama, vuccati. āWorthy Gotama, they speak of āa teaching apparent in the present lifeā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bho gotama, sandiį¹į¹hiko dhammo hoti akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«āti? In what way is the teaching apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?ā
āTena hi, brÄhmaį¹a, taƱƱevettha paį¹ipucchissÄmi. YathÄ te khameyya tathÄ naį¹ byÄkareyyÄsi. āWell then, brahmin, Iāll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brÄhmaį¹a, What do you think, brahmin?
santaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgaį¹ āatthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgoāti pajÄnÄsi, asantaį¹ vÄ ajjhattaį¹ rÄgaį¹ ānatthi me ajjhattaį¹ rÄgoāti pajÄnÄsÄ«āti? When thereās greed in you, do you understand āI have greed in meā? And when thereās no greed in you, do you understand āI have no greed in meā?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā

evampi kho, brÄhmaį¹a, sandiį¹į¹hiko dhammo hoti ā¦peā¦. this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.

āAbhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
