DÄrukkhandhasutta A Tree Trunk
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time Venerable SÄriputta was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ nivÄsetvÄ pattacÄ«varamÄdÄya sambahulehi bhikkhÅ«hi saddhiį¹ gijjhakÅ«į¹Ä pabbatÄ orohanto addasa aƱƱatarasmiį¹ padese mahantaį¹ dÄrukkhandhaį¹. Then Venerable SÄriputta robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, descended the Vultureās Peak together with several mendicants. At a certain spot he saw a large tree trunk,
DisvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: and he addressed the mendicants,
āpassatha no, Ävuso, tumhe amuį¹ mahantaį¹ dÄrukkhandhanāti? āReverends, do you see this large tree trunk?ā
āEvamÄvusoāti. āYes, reverend.ā

khamÄno, Ävuso, bhikkhu iddhimÄ cetovasippatto amuį¹ dÄrukkhandhaį¹ pathavÄ«tveva adhimucceyya. āIf they wanted to, a mendicant with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but earth.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Atthi, Ävuso, amumhi dÄrukkhandhe pathavÄ«dhÄtu, yaį¹ nissÄya bhikkhu iddhimÄ cetovasippatto amuį¹ dÄrukkhandhaį¹ pathavÄ«tveva adhimucceyya. Because the earth element exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but earth.

tejotveva adhimucceyya ā¦ Or they could determine it to be nothing but fire ā¦
vÄyotveva adhimucceyya ā¦ Or they could determine it to be nothing but air ā¦
subhantveva adhimucceyya ā¦ Or they could determine it to be nothing but beautiful ā¦
asubhantveva adhimucceyya. Or they could determine it to be nothing but ugly.
Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?
Atthi, Ävuso, amumhi dÄrukkhandhe asubhadhÄtu, yaį¹ nissÄya bhikkhu iddhimÄ cetovasippatto amuį¹ dÄrukkhandhaį¹ asubhantveva adhimucceyyÄāti. Because the element of ugliness exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a mendicant with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but ugly.ā
