AttakÄrÄ«sutta Oneās Own Volition
Atha kho aƱƱataro brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
āahaƱhi, bho gotama, evaį¹vÄdÄ« evaį¹diį¹į¹hi: āWorthy Gotama, this is my doctrine and view:
ānatthi attakÄro, natthi parakÄroāāti. One does not act of oneās own volition, nor does one act of anotherās volition.ā
āMÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, evaį¹vÄdiį¹ evaį¹diį¹į¹hiį¹ addasaį¹ vÄ assosiį¹ vÄ. āBrahmin, may I never see or hear of anyone holding such a doctrine or view!
KathaƱhi nÄma sayaį¹ abhikkamanto, sayaį¹ paį¹ikkamanto evaį¹ vakkhati: How on earth can someone who comes and goes on his own say that
ānatthi attakÄro, natthi parakÄroāti. one does not act of oneās own volition, nor does one act of anotherās volition?
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brÄhmaį¹a, atthi ÄrabbhadhÄtÅ«āti? What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of initiative?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āÄrabbhadhÄtuyÄ sati Ärabbhavanto sattÄ paƱƱÄyantÄ«āti? āSince this is so, do we find sentient beings who initiate activity?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āYaį¹ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, ÄrabbhadhÄtuyÄ sati Ärabbhavanto sattÄ paƱƱÄyanti, ayaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ attakÄro ayaį¹ parakÄro. āSince there is an element of initiative, and sentient beings who initiate activity are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, brÄhmaį¹a, atthi nikkamadhÄtu ā¦peā¦ What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of persistence ā¦
atthi parakkamadhÄtu ā¦ exertion ā¦
atthi thÄmadhÄtu ā¦ strength ā¦
atthi į¹hitidhÄtu ā¦ endurance ā¦
atthi upakkamadhÄtÅ«āti? energy?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āUpakkamadhÄtuyÄ sati upakkamavanto sattÄ paƱƱÄyantÄ«āti? āSince this is so, do we find sentient beings who have energy?ā
āEvaį¹, bhoā. āYes, sir.ā
āYaį¹ kho, brÄhmaį¹a, upakkamadhÄtuyÄ sati upakkamavanto sattÄ paƱƱÄyanti, ayaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ attakÄro ayaį¹ parakÄro. āSince there is an element of energy, and sentient beings who have energy are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.
MÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, evaį¹vÄdiį¹ evaį¹diį¹į¹hiį¹ addasaį¹ vÄ assosiį¹ vÄ. Brahmin, may I never see or hear of anyone holding such a doctrine or view!
