SÄmakasutta At SÄma Village
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati sÄmagÄmake pokkharaį¹iyÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans near the little village of SÄma, by a lotus pond.
Atha kho aƱƱatarÄ devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ pokkharaį¹iyaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho sÄ devatÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire lotus pond, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him,
āTayome, bhante, dhammÄ bhikkhuno parihÄnÄya saį¹vattanti. āSir, three qualities lead to the decline of a mendicant.
Katame tayo? What three?
KammÄrÄmatÄ, bhassÄrÄmatÄ, niddÄrÄmatÄāRelishing work, talk, and sleep.
ime kho, bhante, tayo dhammÄ bhikkhuno parihÄnÄya saį¹vattantÄ«āti. These three qualities lead to the decline of a mendicant.ā
Idamavoca sÄ devatÄ. Thatās what that deity said,
SamanuƱƱo satthÄ ahosi. and the teacher approved.
Atha kho sÄ devatÄ āsamanuƱƱo me satthÄāti bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyi. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
Atha kho bhagavÄ tassÄ rattiyÄ accayena bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened, adding:
āimaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ aƱƱatarÄ devatÄ abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ pokkharaį¹iyaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yenÄhaį¹ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho, bhikkhave, sÄ devatÄ maį¹ etadavoca:
ātayome, bhante, dhammÄ bhikkhuno parihÄnÄya saį¹vattanti.

KammÄrÄmatÄ, bhassÄrÄmatÄ, niddÄrÄmatÄā
ime kho, bhante, tayo dhammÄ bhikkhuno parihÄnÄya saį¹vattantÄ«āti.
Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sÄ devatÄ.
Idaį¹ vatvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyi.
Tesaį¹ vo, bhikkhave, alÄbhÄ tesaį¹ dulladdhaį¹, ye vo devatÄpi jÄnanti kusalehi dhammehi parihÄyamÄne. āItās unfortunate for those of you who even the deities know are declining in skillful qualities.
Aparepi, bhikkhave, tayo parihÄniye dhamme desessÄmi. I will teach you three more qualities that lead to decline.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
ākatame ca, bhikkhave, tayo parihÄniyÄ dhammÄ? āAnd what, mendicants, are three qualities that lead to decline?

gaį¹ikÄrÄmatÄ, dovacassatÄ, pÄpamittatÄāEnjoyment of company, being hard to admonish, and having bad friends.
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo parihÄniyÄ dhammÄ. These three qualities lead to decline.
Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, atÄ«tamaddhÄnaį¹ parihÄyiį¹su kusalehi dhammehi, sabbete imeheva chahi dhammehi parihÄyiį¹su kusalehi dhammehi. Whether in the past, future, or present, all those who decline in skillful qualities do so because of these six qualities.ā
Yepi hi keci, bhikkhave, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ parihÄyissanti kusalehi dhammehi, sabbete imeheva chahi dhammehi parihÄyissanti kusalehi dhammehi.
Yepi hi keci, bhikkhave, etarahi parihÄyanti kusalehi dhammehi, sabbete imeheva chahi dhammehi parihÄyanti kusalehi dhammehÄ«āti.
