PuggalappasÄdasutta Faith in Individuals
āPaƱcime, bhikkhave, ÄdÄ«navÄ puggalappasÄde. āMendicants, there are these five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.
Katame paƱca? What five?
Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathÄrÅ«paį¹ Äpattiį¹ Äpanno hoti yathÄrÅ«pÄya ÄpattiyÄ saį¹
gho ukkhipati. The individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saį¹
gha suspends them.
Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to them:
āyo kho myÄyaį¹ puggalo piyo manÄpo so saį¹
ghena ukkhittoāti. āThis person dear and beloved to me has been suspended by the Saį¹
gha.ā
BhikkhÅ«su appasÄdabahulo hoti. They lose much of their faith in mendicants.
BhikkhÅ«su appasÄdabahulo samÄno aƱƱe bhikkhÅ« na bhajati. So they donāt frequent other mendicants,
AƱƱe bhikkhÅ« abhajanto saddhammaį¹ na suį¹Äti. they donāt hear the true teaching,
Saddhammaį¹ asuį¹anto saddhammÄ parihÄyati. and they fall away from the true teaching.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹hamo ÄdÄ«navo puggalappasÄde. This is the first drawback in placing faith in an individual.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, yasmiį¹ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathÄrÅ«paį¹ Äpattiį¹ Äpanno hoti yathÄrÅ«pÄya ÄpattiyÄ saį¹
gho ante nisÄ«dÄpeti. Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted falls into an offense such that the Saį¹
gha makes them sit at the end of the line. ā¦

AƱƱe bhikkhÅ« abhajanto saddhammaį¹ na suį¹Äti.
Saddhammaį¹ asuį¹anto saddhammÄ parihÄyati.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, dutiyo ÄdÄ«navo puggalappasÄde. This is the second drawback in placing faith in an individual.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, yasmiį¹ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so disÄpakkanto hoti ā¦peā¦ so vibbhanto hoti ā¦peā¦ so kÄlaį¹
kato hoti. Furthermore, the individual to whom a person is devoted departs for another region ā¦ disrobes ā¦ passes away.
Tassa evaį¹ hoti: It occurs to them:
āyo kho myÄyaį¹ puggalo piyo manÄpo so kÄlaį¹
katoāti. āThis person dear and beloved to me has passed away.ā
AƱƱe bhikkhÅ« na bhajati. So they donāt frequent other mendicants,
AƱƱe bhikkhÅ« abhajanto saddhammaį¹ na suį¹Äti. they donāt hear the true teaching,
Saddhammaį¹ asuį¹anto saddhammÄ parihÄyati. and they fall away from the true teaching.
Ayaį¹, bhikkhave, paƱcamo ÄdÄ«navo puggalappasÄde. This is the fifth drawback in placing faith in an individual.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca ÄdÄ«navÄ puggalappasÄdeāti. These are the five drawbacks of placing faith in an individual.ā
