Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
Tena kho pana samayena paƱcamattÄni licchavisatÄni bhagavantaį¹ payirupÄsanti. Now at that time around five hundred Licchavis were visiting the Buddha.
Appekacce licchavÄ« nÄ«lÄ honti nÄ«lavaį¹į¹Ä nÄ«lavatthÄ nÄ«lÄlaį¹
kÄrÄ, appekacce licchavÄ« pÄ«tÄ honti pÄ«tavaį¹į¹Ä pÄ«tavatthÄ pÄ«tÄlaį¹
kÄrÄ, appekacce licchavÄ« lohitakÄ honti lohitakavaį¹į¹Ä lohitakavatthÄ lohitakÄlaį¹
kÄrÄ, appekacce licchavÄ« odÄtÄ honti odÄtavaį¹į¹Ä odÄtavatthÄ odÄtÄlaį¹
kÄrÄ. Some of the Licchavis were in blue, of blue color, clad in blue, adorned with blue. And some were similarly colored in yellow, red, or white.
Tyassudaį¹ bhagavÄ atirocati vaį¹į¹ena ceva yasasÄ ca. But the Buddha outshone them all in beauty and glory.

giyÄnÄ« brÄhmaį¹o uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ ekaį¹saį¹ uttarÄsaį¹
gaį¹ karitvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹ÄmetvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then the brahmin Piį¹
gÄ«yÄnÄ« got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said,
āpaį¹ibhÄti maį¹, bhagavÄ, paį¹ibhÄti maį¹, sugatÄāti. āI feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!ā
āPaį¹ibhÄtu taį¹ piį¹
giyÄnÄ«āti bhagavÄ avoca. āThen speak as you feel inspired,ā said the Buddha.
Atha kho piį¹
giyÄnÄ« brÄhmaį¹o bhagavato sammukhÄ sÄruppÄya gÄthÄya abhitthavi: So the brahmin Piį¹
gÄ«yÄnÄ« extolled the Buddha in his presence with a fitting verse.
āPadmaį¹ yathÄ kokanadaį¹ sugandhaį¹, āLike a fragrant pink lotus
PÄto siyÄ phullamavÄ«tagandhaį¹; that blooms in the morning, its fragrance unfadedā

gīrasa shine,
TapantamÄdiccamivantalikkheāti. bright as the sun in the sky!ā
Atha kho te licchavÄ« paƱcahi uttarÄsaį¹
gasatehi piį¹
giyÄniį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ acchÄdesuį¹. Then those Licchavis clothed Piį¹
giyÄnÄ« with five hundred upper robes.

giyÄnÄ« brÄhmaį¹o tehi paƱcahi uttarÄsaį¹
gasatehi bhagavantaį¹ acchÄdesi. And Piį¹
giyÄnÄ« clothed the Buddha with them.
Atha kho bhagavÄ te licchavÄ« etadavoca: Then the Buddha said to the Licchavis:
āpaƱcannaį¹, licchavÄ«, ratanÄnaį¹ pÄtubhÄvo dullabho lokasmiį¹. āLicchavis, the appearance of five treasures is rare in the world.
Katamesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹? What five?
TathÄgatassa arahato sammÄsambuddhassa pÄtubhÄvo dullabho lokasmiį¹. A Realized One, a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha.
TathÄgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desetÄ puggalo dullabho lokasmiį¹. A teacher of the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.
TathÄgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desitassa viƱƱÄtÄ puggalo dullabho lokasmiį¹. A person who understands the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One.
TathÄgatappaveditassa dhammavinayassa desitassa viƱƱÄtÄ dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno puggalo dullabho lokasmiį¹. A person who practices in line with the teaching.
KataĆ±Ć±Å« katavedÄ« puggalo dullabho lokasmiį¹. A person who is grateful and thankful.
Imesaį¹ kho, licchavÄ«, paƱcannaį¹ ratanÄnaį¹ pÄtubhÄvo dullabho lokasmināti. The appearance of these five treasures is rare in the world.ā
