Khippanisantisutta Quick-witted

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṁ sammodi. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:

ā€œKittāvatā nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu khippanisanti ca hoti, kusalesu dhammesu suggahitaggāhÄ« ca, bahuƱca gaṇhāti, gahitaƱcassa nappamussatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend Sāriputta, how are we to define a mendicant who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what they’ve learned?ā€

ā€œÄ€yasmā kho ānando bahussuto. ā€œWell, Venerable Ānanda, you’re very learned.

Paį¹ibhātu āyasmantaṁyeva ānandanā€ti. Why don’t you clarify this yourself?ā€

ā€œTenahāvuso sāriputta, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. ā€œWell then, Reverend Sāriputta, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvamāvusoā€ti kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi. ā€œYes, reverend,ā€ Sāriputta replied.

Āyasmā ānando etadavoca: Venerable Ānanda said this:

ā€œIdhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu atthakusalo ca hoti, dhammakusalo ca, byaƱjanakusalo ca, niruttikusalo ca, pubbāparakusalo ca. ā€œIt’s when a mendicant is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence.

Ettāvatā kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu khippanisanti ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu, suggahitaggāhÄ« ca, bahuƱca gaṇhāti, gahitaƱcassa nappamussatÄ«ā€ti. That is how to define a mendicant who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what they’ve learned.ā€

ā€œAcchariyaṁ, āvuso, abbhutaṁ, āvuso. ā€œIt’s incredible, it’s amazing!

Yāva subhāsitaƱcidaṁ āyasmatā ānandena. How well this was said by Venerable Ānanda!

Imehi ca mayaṁ paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgataṁ āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ dhārema: And we will remember Venerable Ānanda as someone who has these five qualities:

ā€˜Äyasmā ānando atthakusalo dhammakusalo byaƱjanakusalo niruttikusalo pubbāparakusaloā€™ā€ti. ā€˜Reverend Ānanda is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence.ā€™ā€

Navamaṁ.
