Sājīvasutta Sharing a Way of Life

Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhÅ« āmantesi …pe… There Venerable Sāriputta addressed the mendicants:

paƱcahi, āvuso, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁsājÄ«vo sabrahmacārÄ«naṁ. ā€œA mendicant with five qualities is fit to share their life with their spiritual companions.

Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu attanā ca sīlasampanno hoti, sīlasampadākathāya ca āgataṁ pañhaṁ byākattā hoti; A mendicant is personally accomplished in ethics, and answers questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in ethics.

attanā ca samādhisampanno hoti, samādhisampadākathāya ca āgataṁ paƱhaṁ byākattā hoti; They’re personally accomplished in immersion, …

attanā ca paƱƱāsampanno hoti, paƱƱāsampadākathāya ca āgataṁ paƱhaṁ byākattā hoti; They’re personally accomplished in wisdom, …

attanā ca vimuttisampanno hoti, vimuttisampadākathāya ca āgataṁ paƱhaṁ byākattā hoti; They’re personally accomplished in freedom, …

attanā ca vimuttiñāṇadassanasampanno hoti, vimuttiñāṇadassanasampadākathāya ca āgataṁ paƱhaṁ byākattā hoti. They’re personally accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom, and they answer questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in the knowledge and vision of freedom.

Imehi kho, āvuso, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁsājÄ«vo sabrahmacārÄ«nanā€ti. A mendicant with these five qualities is fit to share their life with their spiritual companions.ā€
