Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery.
Tena kho pana samayena ÄyasmÄ udÄyÄ« mahatiyÄ gihiparisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ desento nisinno hoti. Now, at that time Venerable UdÄyÄ« was sitting teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.
AddasÄ kho ÄyasmÄ Änando Äyasmantaį¹ udÄyiį¹ mahatiyÄ gihiparisÄya parivutaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentaį¹ nisinnaį¹. Seeing this, Venerable Änanda
DisvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āÄyasmÄ, bhante, udÄyÄ« mahatiyÄ gihiparisÄya parivuto dhammaį¹ desetÄ«āti. āSir, Venerable UdÄyÄ« is teaching Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople.ā
āNa kho, Änanda, sukaraį¹ paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ desetuį¹. āÄnanda, itās not easy to teach Dhamma to others.
Paresaį¹, Änanda, dhammaį¹ desentena paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpetvÄ paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo. You should establish five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others.
Katame paƱca? What five?
āAnupubbiį¹ kathaį¹ kathessÄmÄ«āti paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo; You should teach Dhamma to others thinking: āI will teach step by step.ā ā¦
āpariyÄyadassÄvÄ« kathaį¹ kathessÄmÄ«āti paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo; āI will teach showing my method.ā ā¦
āanuddayataį¹ paį¹icca kathaį¹ kathessÄmÄ«āti paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo; āI will teach out of kindness.ā ā¦
āna Ämisantaro kathaį¹ kathessÄmÄ«āti paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo; āI will not teach while secretly hoping to profit.ā ā¦
āattÄnaƱca paraƱca anupahacca kathaį¹ kathessÄmÄ«āti paresaį¹ dhammo desetabbo. āI will teach without hurting myself or others.ā
Na kho, Änanda, sukaraį¹ paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ desetuį¹. Itās not easy to teach Dhamma to others.
Paresaį¹, Änanda, dhammaį¹ desentena ime paƱca dhamme ajjhattaį¹ upaį¹į¹hÄpetvÄ paresaį¹ dhammo desetabboāti. You should establish these five things in yourself before teaching Dhamma to others.ā
