Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āādhammavihÄrÄ«, dhammavihÄrÄ«āti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of āone who lives by the teachingā.
KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu dhammavihÄrÄ« hotÄ«āti? How is a mendicant who lives by the teaching defined?ā
āIdha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyÄpuį¹ÄtiāāMendicant, take a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā
suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyÄkaraį¹aį¹, gÄthaį¹, udÄnaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jÄtakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.
So tÄya dhammapariyattiyÄ divasaį¹ atinÄmeti, riƱcati paį¹isallÄnaį¹, nÄnuyuƱjati ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathaį¹. They spend too much time studying that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu: ābhikkhu pariyattibahulo, no dhammavihÄrÄ«ā. That mendicant is called one who studies a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathÄsutaį¹ yathÄpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthÄrena paresaį¹ deseti. Furthermore, a mendicant teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it.
So tÄya dhammapaƱƱattiyÄ divasaį¹ atinÄmeti, riƱcati paį¹isallÄnaį¹, nÄnuyuƱjati ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathaį¹. They spend too much time advocating that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu: ābhikkhu paƱƱattibahulo, no dhammavihÄrÄ«ā. That mendicant is called one who advocates a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathÄsutaį¹ yathÄpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ vitthÄrena sajjhÄyaį¹ karoti. Furthermore, a mendicant recites the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it.
So tena sajjhÄyena divasaį¹ atinÄmeti, riƱcati paį¹isallÄnaį¹, nÄnuyuƱjati ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathaį¹. They spend too much time reciting that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu: ābhikkhu sajjhÄyabahulo, no dhammavihÄrÄ«ā. That mendicant is called one who recites a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhu, bhikkhu yathÄsutaį¹ yathÄpariyattaį¹ dhammaį¹ cetasÄ anuvitakketi anuvicÄreti manasÄnupekkhati. Furthermore, a mendicant thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it.
So tehi dhammavitakkehi divasaį¹ atinÄmeti, riƱcati paį¹isallÄnaį¹, nÄnuyuƱjati ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathaį¹. They spend too much time thinking about that teaching. They neglect retreat, and are not committed to internal serenity of heart.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu: ābhikkhu vitakkabahulo, no dhammavihÄrÄ«ā. That mendicant is called one who thinks a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Idha, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammaį¹ pariyÄpuį¹ÄtiāTake a mendicant who memorizes the teachingā
suttaį¹, geyyaį¹, veyyÄkaraį¹aį¹, gÄthaį¹, udÄnaį¹, itivuttakaį¹, jÄtakaį¹, abbhutadhammaį¹, vedallaį¹. statements, mixed prose & verse, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and elaborations.
So tÄya dhammapariyattiyÄ na divasaį¹ atinÄmeti, nÄpi riƱcati paį¹isallÄnaį¹, anuyuƱjati ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathaį¹. They donāt spend too much time studying that teaching. They donāt neglect retreat, and theyāre committed to internal serenity of heart.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, bhikkhu dhammavihÄrÄ« hoti. Thatās how a mendicant is one who lives by the teaching.
Iti kho, bhikkhu, desito mayÄ pariyattibahulo, desito paƱƱattibahulo, desito sajjhÄyabahulo, desito vitakkabahulo, desito dhammavihÄrÄ«. So, mendicant, Iāve taught you the one who studies a lot, the one who advocates a lot, the one who recites a lot, the one who thinks a lot, and the one who lives by the teaching.
Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, satthÄrÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ sÄvakÄnaį¹ hitesinÄ anukampakena anukampaį¹ upÄdÄya, kataį¹ vo taį¹ mayÄ. Out of sympathy, Iāve done what a teacher should do who wants whatās best for their disciples.
EtÄni, bhikkhu, rukkhamÅ«lÄni, etÄni suƱƱÄgÄrÄni. JhÄyatha, bhikkhu, mÄ pamÄdattha, mÄ pacchÄ vippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha. Ayaį¹ vo amhÄkaį¹ anusÄsanÄ«āti. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicant! Donāt be negligent! Donāt regret it later! This is my instruction to you.ā
