NibbÄnasutta Extinguishment
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yenÄyasmÄ sÄriputto tenupasaį¹

kamitvÄ ÄyasmatÄ sÄriputtena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then Venerable Änanda went up to Venerable SÄriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando Äyasmantaį¹ sÄriputtaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Änanda sat down to one side, and said to SÄriputta:
āko nu kho, Ävuso sÄriputta, hetu ko paccayo, yena māidhekacce sattÄ diį¹į¹heva dhamme na parinibbÄyantÄ«āti? āWhat is the cause, Reverend SÄriputta, what is the reason why some sentient beings are not fully extinguished in this very life?ā
āIdhÄvuso Änanda, sattÄ imÄ hÄnabhÄgiyÄ saƱƱÄti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, imÄ į¹hitibhÄgiyÄ saƱƱÄti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, imÄ visesabhÄgiyÄ saƱƱÄti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti, imÄ nibbedhabhÄgiyÄ saƱƱÄti yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ nappajÄnanti. āReverend Änanda, itās because some sentient beings donāt really understand which perceptions make things worse, which keep things steady, which lead to distinction, and which lead to penetration.
Ayaį¹ kho, Ävuso Änanda, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo, yena māidhekacce sattÄ diį¹į¹heva dhamme na parinibbÄyantÄ«āti. Thatās the cause, thatās the reason why some sentient beings are not fully extinguished in this very life.ā
