Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yenāyasmā mahākoį¹į¹hiko tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākoį¹į¹hikena saddhiṁ sammodi. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to Venerable Mahākoį¹į¹hita, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantaṁ mahākoį¹į¹hikaṁ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Ānanda sat down to one side, and said to Mahākoį¹į¹hita:

ā€œChannaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcÄ«ā€ti? ā€œReverend, when these six fields of contact have faded away and ceased with nothing left over, does something else exist?ā€

ā€œMā hevaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œDon’t put it like that, reverend.ā€

ā€œChannaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDoes something else no longer exist?ā€

ā€œMā hevaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œDon’t put it like that, reverend.ā€

ā€œChannaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthi ca natthi ca aƱƱaṁ kiƱcÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDoes something else both still exist and no longer exist?ā€

ā€œMā hevaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œDon’t put it like that, reverend.ā€

ā€œChannaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā nevatthi no natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcÄ«ā€ti? ā€œDoes something else neither still exist nor no longer exist?ā€

ā€œMā hevaṁ, āvusoā€. ā€œDon’t put it like that, reverend.ā€

ā€œā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti puį¹į¹ho samāno: ā€œReverend, when asked these questions,

ā€˜mā hevaṁ, āvuso’ti vadesi. you say ā€˜don’t put it like that’.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti puį¹į¹ho samāno:

ā€˜mā hevaṁ, āvuso’ti vadesi.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthi ca natthi ca aƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti puį¹į¹ho samāno:

ā€˜mā hevaṁ, āvuso’ti vadesi.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā nevatthi no natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti puį¹į¹ho samāno:

ā€˜mā hevaṁ, āvuso’ti vadesi.

Yathā kathaṁ panāvuso, imassa bhāsitassa attho daį¹į¹habboā€ti? … How then should we see the meaning of this statement?ā€

ā€œā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti vadaṁ appapaƱcaṁ papaƱceti. ā€œIf you say that ā€˜when the six fields of contact have faded away and ceased with nothing left over, something else exists’, you’re proliferating the unproliferated.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti vadaṁ appapaƱcaṁ papaƱceti. If you say that ā€˜something else no longer exists’, you’re proliferating the unproliferated.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā atthi ca natthi ca aƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti vadaṁ appapaƱcaṁ papaƱceti. If you say that ā€˜something else both still exists and no longer exists’, you’re proliferating the unproliferated.

ā€˜Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā nevatthi no natthaƱƱaṁ kiƱcī’ti, iti vadaṁ appapaƱcaṁ papaƱceti. If you say that ā€˜something else neither still exists nor no longer exists’, you’re proliferating the unproliferated.

Yāvatā, āvuso, channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ gati tāvatā papañcassa gati. The scope of proliferation extends as far as the scope of the six fields of contact.

Yāvatā papañcassa gati tāvatā channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ gati. The scope of the six fields of contact extends as far as the scope of proliferation.

Channaṁ, āvuso, phassāyatanānaṁ asesavirāganirodhā papaƱcanirodho papaƱcavÅ«pasamoā€ti. When the six fields of contact fade away and cease with nothing left over, proliferation stops and is stilled.ā€

Catutthaṁ.
