Ārakkhasutta Guarding

ā€œCatÅ«su, bhikkhave, į¹­hānesu attarÅ«pena appamādo sati cetaso ārakkho karaṇīyo. ā€œMendicants, in your own way you should practice diligence, mindfulness, and guarding of the mind in four situations.

Katamesu catūsu? What four?

ā€˜Mā me rajanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ rajjī’ti attarÅ«pena appamādo sati cetaso ārakkho karaṇīyo; ā€˜May my mind not be aroused by things that arouse greed.’ In your own way you should practice diligence, mindfulness, and guarding of the mind.

ā€˜mā me dosanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ dussī’ti attarÅ«pena appamādo sati cetaso ārakkho karaṇīyo; ā€˜May my mind not be angered by things that provoke hate.’ …

ā€˜mā me mohanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ muyhī’ti attarÅ«pena appamādo sati cetaso ārakkho karaṇīyo; ā€˜May my mind not be deluded by things that promote delusion.’ …

ā€˜mā me madanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ majjī’ti attarÅ«pena appamādo sati cetaso ārakkho karaṇīyo. ā€˜May my mind not be intoxicated by things that intoxicate.’ …

Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno rajanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ na rajjati vÄ«tarāgattā, dosanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ na dussati vÄ«tadosattā, mohanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ na muyhati vÄ«tamohattā, madanÄ«yesu dhammesu cittaṁ na majjati vÄ«tamadattā, so na chambhati na kampati na vedhati na santāsaṁ āpajjati, na ca pana samaṇavacanahetupi gacchatÄ«ā€ti. When a mendicant’s mind is no longer affected by greed, hate, delusion, or intoxication because they’ve got rid of these things, they don’t shake, tremble, quake, or get nervous, nor are they persuaded by the teachings of other ascetics.ā€
