Atha kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable SÄriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tÄdisÄva vaį¹ijjÄ payuttÄ chedagÄminÄ« hoti? āSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why for different people the same kind of business undertaking might fail,
Ko pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tÄdisÄva vaį¹ijjÄ payuttÄ na yathÄdhippÄyÄ hoti? while another doesnāt meet expectations,
Ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tÄdisÄva vaį¹ijjÄ payuttÄ yathÄdhippÄyÄ hoti? another meets expectations,
Ko pana, bhante, hetu ko paccayo, yena midhekaccassa tÄdisÄva vaį¹ijjÄ payuttÄ parÄdhippÄyÄ hotÄ«āti? and another exceeds expectations?ā
āIdha, sÄriputta, ekacco samaį¹aį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ vÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ pavÄreti: āvadatu, bhante, paccayenÄāti. So yena pavÄreti taį¹ na deti. āSÄriputta, take a case where someone goes to an ascetic or brahmin and invites them to ask for what they need. But they fail to give whatās requested.
So ce tato cuto itthattaį¹ Ägacchati, so yaƱƱadeva vaį¹ijjaį¹ payojeti, sÄssa hoti chedagÄminÄ«. When theyāve passed away from that life, if theyāre reborn in this place, whatever business they undertake fails.
Idha pana, sÄriputta, ekacco samaį¹aį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ vÄ upasaį¹
kamitvÄ pavÄreti: āvadatu, bhante, paccayenÄāti. So yena pavÄreti taį¹ na yathÄdhippÄyaį¹ deti. Take a case where someone goes to an ascetic or brahmin and invites them to ask for what they need. They give whatās requested, but donāt meet expectations.
