Kusinārasutta At Kusinārā

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kusinārāyaṁ viharati upavattane mallānaṁ sālavane antarena yamakasālānaṁ parinibbānasamaye. At one time the Buddha was staying between a pair of sal trees in the sal forest of the Mallas at Upavattana near Kusinārā at the time of his full extinguishment.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œSiyā kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā buddhe vā dhamme vā saį¹…ghe vā magge vā paį¹ipadāya vā, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mā pacchā vippaį¹isārino ahuvattha: ā€œPerhaps even a single mendicant has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹…gha, the path, or the practice. So ask, mendicants! Don’t regret it later, thinking:

ā€˜sammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthā ahosi, nāsakkhimha bhagavantaṁ sammukhā paį¹ipucchitunā€™ā€ti. ā€˜We were in the Teacher’s presence and we weren’t able to ask the Buddha a question.ā€™ā€

Evaṁ vutte, te bhikkhÅ« tuṇhÄ« ahesuṁ. When this was said, the mendicants kept silent.

Dutiyampi kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: For a second time the Buddha addressed the mendicants: …

ā€œsiyā kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā buddhe vā dhamme vā saį¹…ghe vā magge vā paį¹ipadāya vā, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mā pacchā vippaį¹isārino ahuvattha:

ā€˜sammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthā ahosi, nāsakkhimha bhagavantaṁ sammukhā paį¹ipucchitunā€™ā€ti.

Dutiyampi kho te bhikkhÅ« tuṇhÄ« ahesuṁ. For a second time, the mendicants kept silent.

Tatiyampi kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: For a third time the Buddha addressed the mendicants: …

ā€œsiyā kho pana, bhikkhave, ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā buddhe vā dhamme vā saį¹…ghe vā magge vā paį¹ipadāya vā, pucchatha, bhikkhave, mā pacchā vippaį¹isārino ahuvattha:

ā€˜sammukhÄ«bhÅ«to no satthā ahosi, nāsakkhimha bhagavantaṁ sammukhā paį¹ipucchitunā€™ā€ti.

Tatiyampi kho te bhikkhÅ« tuṇhÄ« ahesuṁ. For a third time, the mendicants kept silent.

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to the mendicants:

ā€œsiyā kho pana, bhikkhave, satthugāravenapi na puccheyyātha, sahāyakopi, bhikkhave, sahāyakassa ārocetÅ«ā€ti. ā€œMendicants, perhaps you don’t ask out of respect for the Teacher. So let a friend tell a friend.ā€

Evaṁ vutte, te bhikkhÅ« tuṇhÄ« ahesuṁ. When this was said, the mendicants kept silent.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha:

ā€œacchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante. ā€œIt’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing!

Evaṁ pasanno ahaṁ, bhante. Natthi imasmiṁ bhikkhusaį¹…ghe ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā buddhe vā dhamme vā saį¹…ghe vā magge vā paį¹ipadāya vāā€ti. I am quite confident that there’s not even a single mendicant in this Saį¹…gha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹…gha, the path, or the practice.ā€

ā€œPasādā kho tvaṁ, ānanda, vadesi. Ñāṇameva hettha, ānanda, tathāgatassa: ā€˜natthi imasmiṁ bhikkhusaį¹…ghe ekabhikkhussapi kaį¹…khā vā vimati vā buddhe vā dhamme vā saį¹…ghe vā magge vā paį¹ipadāya vā’. ā€œÄ€nanda, you speak from faith. But the Realized One knows that there’s not even a single mendicant in this Saį¹…gha who has doubt or uncertainty regarding the Buddha, the teaching, the Saį¹…gha, the path, or the practice.

ImesaƱhi, ānanda, paƱcannaṁ bhikkhusatānaṁ yo pacchimako bhikkhu so sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇoā€ti. Even the last of these five hundred mendicants is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.ā€

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
