āPanuį¹į¹apaccekasacco, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsamavayasaį¹į¹hesano passaddhakÄyasaį¹
khÄro patilÄ«noāti vuccati. āMendicants, a mendicant has eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth, has totally given up searching, has stilled the physical process, and is said to be āwithdrawnā.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu panuį¹į¹apaccekasacco hoti? And how has a mendicant eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno yÄni tÄni puthusamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Änaį¹ puthupaccekasaccÄni, seyyathidaį¹āDifferent ascetics and brahmins have different idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth. For example:
sassato lokoti vÄ, asassato lokoti vÄ, antavÄ lokoti vÄ, anantavÄ lokoti vÄ, taį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ taį¹ sarÄ«ranti vÄ, aƱƱaį¹ jÄ«vaį¹ aƱƱaį¹ sarÄ«ranti vÄ, hoti tathÄgato paraį¹ maraį¹Äti vÄ, na hoti tathÄgato paraį¹ maraį¹Äti vÄ, hoti ca na ca hoti tathÄgato paraį¹ maraį¹Äti vÄ, neva hoti na na hoti tathÄgato paraį¹ maraį¹Äti vÄ; the cosmos is eternal, or not eternal, or finite, or infinite; the soul and the body are the same thing, or they are different things; after death, a realized one still exists, or no longer exists, or both still exists and no longer exists, or neither still exists nor no longer exists.
sabbÄni tÄni nuį¹į¹Äni honti panuį¹į¹Äni cattÄni vantÄni muttÄni pahÄ«nÄni paį¹inissaį¹į¹hÄni. A mendicant has dispelled, eliminated, thrown out, rejected, let go of, given up, and relinquished all these.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samavayasaį¹į¹hesano hoti? And how has a mendicant totally given up searching?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kÄmesanÄ pahÄ«nÄ hoti, bhavesanÄ pahÄ«nÄ hoti, brahmacariyesanÄ paį¹ippassaddhÄ. Itās when theyāve given up searching for sensual pleasures, for continued existence, and for a spiritual path.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samavayasaį¹į¹hesano hoti. Thatās how a mendicant has totally given up searching.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu passaddhakÄyasaį¹
khÄro hoti? And how has a mendicant stilled the physical process?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahÄnÄ dukkhassa ca pahÄnÄ pubbeva somanassadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹
gamÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ upekkhÄsatipÄrisuddhiį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. Itās when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

khÄro hoti. Thatās how a mendicant has stilled the physical process.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu patilīno hoti? And how is a mendicant withdrawn?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno asmimÄno pahÄ«no hoti ucchinnamÅ«lo tÄlÄvatthukato anabhÄvaį¹
kato Äyatiį¹ anuppÄdadhammo. Itās when theyāve given up the conceit āI amā, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, obliterated it, so itās unable to arise in the future.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu patilÄ«no hoti. Thatās how a mendicant is withdrawn.
Panuį¹į¹apaccekasacco, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsamavayasaį¹į¹hesano passaddhakÄyasaį¹
khÄro patilÄ«noāti vuccatÄ«ti. A mendicant has eliminated idiosyncratic interpretations of the truth, has totally given up searching, has stilled the physical process, and is said to be āwithdrawnā.
KÄmesanÄ bhavesanÄ, The search for sensual pleasures, for a good rebirth,
brahmacariyesanÄ saha; and the search for a spiritual path;
Iti saccaparÄmÄso, the holding tight to the thought, āthis is the truthā,
diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hÄnÄ samussayÄ. and the mass of grounds for viewsā
SabbarÄgavirattassa, for one detached from all lusts,
taį¹hakkhayavimuttino; freed by the ending of craving,
EsanÄ paį¹inissaį¹į¹hÄ, that searching has been relinquished,
diį¹į¹hiį¹į¹hÄnÄ samÅ«hatÄ. and those viewpoints eradicated.
Sa ve santo sato bhikkhu, That mendicant is peaceful and mindful,
passaddho aparÄjito; a tranquil champion.
MÄnÄbhisamayÄ buddho, And when theyāre awakened by comprehending conceit,
patilÄ«noti vuccatÄ«āti. theyāre called āwithdrawnā.ā
