PadhÄnasutta Effort
āCattÄrimÄni, bhikkhave, sammappadhÄnÄni. āMendicants, there are these four right efforts.
KatamÄni cattÄri? What four?
Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ anuppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; A mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise.
uppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.
anuppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ uppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.
uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development.
ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, cattÄri sammappadhÄnÄnÄ«ti. These are the four right efforts.
SammappadhÄnÄ mÄradheyyÄbhibhÅ«tÄ, By rightly striving, theyāve crushed MÄraās sovereignty;
Te asitÄ jÄtimaraį¹abhayassa pÄragÅ«; unattached, theyāve gone beyond the peril of birth and death.
Te tusitÄ jetvÄ mÄraį¹ savÄhiniį¹ te anejÄ, Contented and unstirred, theyāve vanquished MÄra and his mount;
Sabbaį¹ namucibalaį¹ upÄtivattÄ te sukhitÄāti. now theyāve gone beyond all Namuciās forces, theyāre happy.ā
