Sobhanasutta Beautification
āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, viyattÄ vinÄ«tÄ visÄradÄ bahussutÄ dhammadharÄ dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipannÄ saį¹
ghaį¹ sobhenti. āMendicants, these four who are competent, educated, assured, and learned, who have memorized the teachings and practice in line with the teachings, grace the Saį¹
gha.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
Bhikkhu, bhikkhave, viyatto vinÄ«to visÄrado bahussuto dhammadharo dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno saį¹
ghaį¹ sobheti. A monk,
BhikkhunÄ«, bhikkhave, viyattÄ vinÄ«tÄ visÄradÄ bahussutÄ dhammadharÄ dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipannÄ saį¹
ghaį¹ sobheti. a nun,

Yo hoti viyatto ca visÄrado ca, Whoever is competent and assured,
Bahussuto dhammadharo ca hoti; learned, a memorizer of the teachings,
Dhammassa hoti anudhammacÄrÄ«, who lives in line with the teachingsā
Sa tÄdiso vuccati saį¹
ghasobhano. such a person is said to grace the Saį¹
gha.
Bhikkhu ca sīlasampanno, A monk accomplished in ethics,
bhikkhunÄ« ca bahussutÄ; and a learned nun,
UpÄsako ca yo saddho, a faithful layman,
yÄ ca saddhÄ upÄsikÄ; and a faithful laywoman, too:
Ete kho saį¹
ghaį¹ sobhenti, these grace the Saį¹
gha,
ete hi saį¹
ghasobhanÄāti. they are the beautifiers of the Saį¹
gha.ā
