Sekkhasutta A Trainee

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œā€˜Sekho, sekho’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this person called ā€˜a trainee’.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekho hotÄ«ā€ti? How is a trainee defined?ā€

ā€œSikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccati. ā€œThey train, mendicant, that’s why they’re called ā€˜a trainee’.

KiƱca sikkhati? What is their training?

Adhisīlampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati. They train in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.

SikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccatÄ«ti. They train, that’s why they’re called ā€˜a trainee’.

Sekhassa sikkhamānassa, As a trainee trains,

ujumaggānusārino; following the straight road,

Khayasmiṁ paį¹­hamaṁ ñāṇaṁ, first they know about ending;

tato aƱƱā anantarā. enlightenment follows in the same lifetime.

Tato aƱƱāvimuttassa, Then the knowledge comes

ñāṇaṁ ve hoti tādino; such a one, freed through enlightenment,

Akuppā me vimuttīti, with the end of the fetters of continued existence:

bhavasaṁyojanakkhayeā€ti. ā€˜My freedom is unshakable.ā€™ā€
