Gandhajātasutta Fragrances

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œTīṇimāni, bhante, gandhajātāni, yesaṁ anuvātaṁyeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹­ivātaṁ. ā€œSir, there are these three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.

Katamāni tīṇi? What three?

MÅ«lagandho, sāragandho, pupphagandho—The fragrance of roots, heartwood, and flowers.

imāni kho, bhante, tīṇi gandhajātāni, yesaṁ anuvātaṁyeva gandho gacchati, no paį¹­ivātaṁ. These are the three kinds of fragrance that spread only with the wind, not against it.

Atthi nu kho, bhante, kiƱci gandhajātaṁ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti? Is there a kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both ways?ā€

ā€œAtthānanda, kiƱci gandhajātaṁ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, Ānanda, such a kind of fragrance.ā€

ā€œKatamaƱca pana, bhante, gandhajātaṁ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaį¹­ivātampi gandho gacchatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSo what, sir, is that kind of fragrance?ā€

ā€œIdhānanda, yasmiṁ gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, ā€œIt’s when, Ānanda, in some village or town, a woman or man has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹…gha.

pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāṇadhammo, They don’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. They’re ethical, of good character.

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato. They live at home with a heart rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Tassa disāsu samaṇabrāhmaṇā vaṇṇaṁ bhāsanti: Ascetics and brahmins everywhere praise them for these good qualities;

ā€˜amukasmiṁ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti,

pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāṇadhammo,

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato’ti.

Devatāpissa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsanti: even the deities praise them.

ā€˜amukasmiṁ nāma gāme vā nigame vā itthÄ« vā puriso vā buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti, saį¹…ghaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti,

pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti …pe… surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, sÄ«lavā hoti kalyāṇadhammo,

vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vossaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato’ti.

Idaṁ kho taṁ, ānanda, gandhajātaṁ yassa anuvātampi gandho gacchati, paṭivātampi gandho gacchati, anuvātapaṭivātampi gandho gacchatīti. This is the kind of fragrance that spreads with the wind, and against it, and both.

Na pupphagandho paį¹­ivātameti, The fragrance of flowers doesn’t spread against the wind,

Na candanaṁ tagaramallikā vā; nor sandalwood, pinwheel flowers, or jasmine;

Satañca gandho paṭivātameti, but the fragrance of the good spreads against the wind;

Sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyatÄ«ā€ti. a true person’s virtue spreads in every direction.ā€
