7. Sukhavagga The Chapter on Happiness

ā€œDvemāni, bhikkhave, sukhāni. ā€œThere are, mendicants, these two kinds of happiness.

Katamāni dve? What two?

GihisukhaƱca pabbajitasukhaƱca. The happiness of laypeople, and the happiness of renunciates.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni. These are the two kinds of happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ pabbajitasukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of renunciates.ā€

KāmasukhaƱca nekkhammasukhaƱca. Sensual happiness and the happiness of renunciation.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni. These are the two kinds of happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nekkhammasukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of renunciation.ā€

UpadhisukhaƱca nirupadhisukhaƱca. The happiness of attachments, and the happiness of no attachments.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni. These are the two kinds of happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nirupadhisukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of no attachments.ā€

SāsavasukhaƱca anāsavasukhaƱca. Defiled happiness and undefiled happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ anāsavasukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of no defilements.ā€

Sāmisañca sukhaṁ nirāmisañca sukhaṁ. Happiness of the flesh and happiness not of the flesh.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nirāmisaṁ sukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness not of the flesh.ā€

AriyasukhaƱca anariyasukhaƱca. Noble happiness and ignoble happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ ariyasukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is noble happiness.ā€

Kāyikañca sukhaṁ cetasikañca sukhaṁ. Physical happiness and mental happiness.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ cetasikaṁ sukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is mental happiness.ā€

Sappītikañca sukhaṁ nippītikañca sukhaṁ. Happiness with rapture and happiness free of rapture.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nippÄ«tikaṁ sukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness free of rapture.ā€

SātasukhaƱca upekkhāsukhaƱca. Happiness with pleasure and happiness with equanimity.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ upekkhāsukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness with equanimity.ā€

SamādhisukhaƱca asamādhisukhaƱca. The happiness of immersion and the happiness without immersion.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ samādhisukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of immersion.ā€

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nippÄ«tikārammaṇaṁ sukhanā€ti. The better of these two kinds of happiness is happiness that relies on freedom from rapture.ā€
